was shit. this was 3 years ago, mind.
P.S. Hi Joe! Why was it shit?
It was shit for many reasons:
a) band we played with borrowed all our equipment and then fucked off with all their mates upstairs (it's a three floored building) so we played to about three people.
b) sound man was an absolute cunt and completely incompetent. claimed we were too loud, used too much reverb, generated too much feedback told one of our guitarists he couldn't use one of his pedals because the jump in volume was too extreme and when we complied with all this, the sound was still shit.
c) unless you're playing with a London-based band, no one will show.
On the plus side, I recall eating a nice piece of flapjack.
it's a real pain in the arse to drive to if you're coming from outside London. I think the only London venue we had more difficulty reaching was the Underworld. And once you're there it's on the main road running through Islington and it's nigh on impossible to find a parking space to unload. And when we played, our monitors didn't work, so I was having to stand facing the PA to actually hear myself. Good times.
Thank you for notifying me of the very reassuring possibility of flapjack.
You back in Cavvers for summer?
I've escaped from Scotland for another year.
Currently watching Romania merking the Italians. What are you up to these days?
You play in the basement so you've got to drag your friends down from the upstairs room. The venue is decent for sound and watching the band but you're usually playing for a promoter who's got people in on a 'we need some random bands' basis, so it won't necessarily be a sympathetic crowd.
When it's not rammed but nicely full it is a great place to play, though.
I just listened to one of the other bands and they are probably my band's opposite in every way.
Quite worried now. Oh well I suppose it's all part of the fun playing gigs to no one.
If I promised to each London DiSer a gift of their choosing would they come?
