when did it become "straight-edging"?
he's a funny man
apparently shes a massive scene whore
that's what any gig at the Underworld looks like.
I hate these people that think that it's a 'rebellion', surely if you don't like drink or drugs you just don't. This is what I hate about the whole 'straight edge' thing, is that people decide to sort of 'join the scene' and stop drinking just to be part of it, rather than just deciding they don't like it of their own accord. Also that's clearly two-stepping and not moshing. Argh I hate the whole trying to justify things to mainstream audiences.
the girl on the end is really articulate and clearly is committed to it. But I've had a lot of experiences with completely pathetic people 'hopping on the bandwagon' that unfairly taints the whole 'straight edge' scene for me, which is unfortunate.
I don't do drugs, fair enough I drink a lot, but I don't think my 'vision would be clearer' without it. That advert's a bit over the top, I mean, I know a lot of it is Minor Threat lyrics, but it makes sXe look like Scientology.
it was just a song.
He wasn't trying to start a youth movement, obviously once the song was in the public domain and other people latched on to it he had no control over the whole thing.
He was writing solely about his own views/experiences and could never have envisaged how seriously some people would take his lyrics as they sought to reinterpret them to fir their own agenda.
Minor Threat were NEVER a sXe band as I frequently have to point out to pricks who attempt to chastise me at shows for drinking whilst wearing a MT shirt.
and also a lot of the whole straight edge thing is just not using alcohol/drugs as an excuse to act like a bellend, people who drink should be responsible for their actions, and id find it hard to think of a reason to disagree with that. I think you cant have a problem with the principles behind the idea, its just when people become sanctimonious shits and look down on people who choose to drink or whatever that it becomes annoying. Like anything when people become preachy about it, or go beyond simply thinking its a matter of choice and trying to make other people agree with them, the ideas get a bad repuation.
Thats my opinion on the whole thing anyway. XSTRAIGHTXEDGEXPRIDEX
just because I drink doesn't mean I advocate ridiculous crap like that. That song serves its purpose in respect to comedy value, but that's about it.
about his experiences of drugs and alcohol is taken as the gospel by others?
The one in the On Thin Ice shirt used to work at the Virgin in Bromley.
All very amusing, obviously this was before fauxmo stepped in to worry mid market tabloid readers.
any programme like that will never ever accurately portray a youth movement. i remember watching it at the time and just thinking what they hell is going on :D
'We asked the young people in our office about it, but none of them had heard of sXe'
Well, of course they fucking haven't....there are probably no more than 500 or so sXe hardcore types in the entire country, if you wanted to put on a sXe all dayer you'd literally have to get all of them to turn up along with every one of the 8 or 9 sXe hardcore bands. You're more likely to meet someone with a season ticket to Dorchester Town FC!
thats the ridiculous thing about it, its a really minor thing being talked about like its a massive deal. in the whole of norwich theres about 50 or so people i think that regularly go to hardcore gigs, let alone are sXe.
I remember back in 2001 or so when there was a lot of trouble in Salt Lake City with violence at sXe shows along with a number of related murders and firebomb attacks on McDonalds, etc the media attempted to stir up a storm about the danger that this would spread to the UK.
The Mail had a hilarious article about the 'growing threat' etc etc, but there weren't enough of them to warrant opening the upstairs seating area in a McDonalds, let alone launch a well organised terror campaign against them!
but its still really funny when you know just how wrong they are.
The 2001 Salt Lake City thing was awful though, what a bunch of twats
Utah as a state is largely unofficially sXe anyway due to the fact that so many of them are Mormons, that probably added a dimension to it.
I'm trying to remember where else was bad...Reno, Nevada was nearly as abd as SLC, Arizona had problems, especially Phoenix which is basically like an American Milton Keynes, but ten times as large...also, Florida too, they had a number of murders.
A 10 times as large milton keynes sounds good to me though!
