Bomb in East London?

MirriLondon [Edit] [Delete] 20 replies 18:54, 3 June '08

Does anyone know whereabouts? The last one screwed my journey up and it's hella raining out there.

LONDON CITY AIRPORT TEMPORARILY CLOSED

Bulletin issued by UK Travel Alert Service:
16.40

Please be advised of the following development(s) that may impact your travel programme:

London City Airport is temporarily closed to all aircraft. Most inbound flights are being diverted whilst outbound services have been cancelled.

This is a safety precaution taken by the airport due to an unexploded WW2 bomb found at a site in East London.

Travellers are advised to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.

  • That's where the word 'unexploded'

    makes all the difference.

    Pigfoot_ @Maxster | 3 Jun '08, 18:55 | X
  • .. it hasn't exploded

    It's from World War II.

    MirriLondon @Maxster | 3 Jun '08, 18:55 | X
  • How close would it have to be to the airport?

    Probably in the docks somewhere.

    Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 18:55 | X
    • I have no idea.

      Hmm.

      MirriLondon @Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 18:56 | X
  • i bet it was islams

Jesus, how big a blast would it have to be to affect the airport?

    Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 18:59 | X
    • Thanks.

      I don't think they're too far apart - just a precaution I suppose.

      MirriLondon @Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 19:01 | X
      • They're pretty far apart

I lived right by the airport last year.

I'll find out the distance. Hold on.

        Pigfoot_ @MirriLondon | 3 Jun '08, 19:02 | X
        • I'd guess it's about four miles

          Pigfoot_ @Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 19:03 | X
          • Thanks.

It's quite far from me so I'm going to mooch off home.

            MirriLondon @Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 19:05 | X
        • Google Earth says 4.9 miles

But I think it sends you on a bit of a detour.

          twentynine @Pigfoot_ | 3 Jun '08, 19:06 | X
    • second one this week!

      http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7432348.stm

maybe they're just concerned about smoke / ash from a potential explosion interfering with navigation?

    • hppy thousandth post

remember that time you managed one thousand posts in three days? we were all so proud.

      • stalker!

        MirriLondon @klaire | 3 Jun '08, 19:03 | X
        • I wish

          Pigfoot_ @MirriLondon | 3 Jun '08, 19:05 | X
      • I remember 500 posts in 24 hours

including having been out all night during those 24 hours.

I had no idea I had 1000 with this account already, though. That's pretty bad.

        Pigfoot_ @klaire | 3 Jun '08, 19:05 | X
  • I'm sure there's a perfectly logical explanation

but how come excavators always seem to find WWII bombs? Surely if they didn't go off when dropped someone would find them?
