How do you go about asking for more money?

As in, something a bit more subtle than:

I’ve been here a year, I work damn hard, I would like more than the inflationary increase that, though obviously much appreciated, gave me £36 extra a month, thanks.

Can you ask for this sort of thing or will I just be earmarked as a money hungry bint?
