So then, 30 Days of Night
Well we ordered this on the old Sky Box Office last night. I have mixed feeling about it.
On the one hand, it was a taut, unnerving and very well made film. There was always a feeling of tension and I enjoyed that thing like vampires smashing through windows happened so you felt scared when people went near windows, but they didn't overuse cheap shocks to keep the atmosphere ratched up (is that a word?). It was at times geniunely scary.
However, there were times where they decided to throw the well worked atmosphere and survival horror element to the wind and have oh I don't know, a man driving around in a JCB with a giant chainsaw attached on to, or man punch a vampire through his head via his mouth.
There were also parts of the story that seemed underused. For instance your man says "Oh we know the town and we know the snow we can use it to our advantage" but do they, at point at all? No, they spend most of the film running between houses with not even the merest hint of an underground tunnel or snow camoflague.
Reading on wiki the graphic novel, things made a little more sense, like the vampires' senses being dulled by the cold but none of this was mentioned at all. I mean, it just needed one line of dialogue. Also the big finale kind of loses its poignancy given the car didn't blow up and the sun comes up 2 seconds later.
Anyway, on the whole a ripping (through the jugular) yarn and I enjoyed it overall. 7/10
