i <3 hostels

alley [Edit] [Delete] 30 replies 07:09, 24 May '08

I am sitting in one right now. I keep hearing all these different accents; I just heard the most beautiful (I think maybe Irish) one yet like a second ago. But each is better than the last. This one's not as vibrant as the last I was in though; I don't know how good it will be communitylike-wise. Also, it is a "youth" hostel, but it has got the highest average hosteler age I've seen, lol. But anyway, HOSTEL! GREAT! What is the single best hostel you've stayed at? For reference for everyone's future travels. My favorite's been the Wanderer's Inn West in NYC.

  • My favourites:

The IYHA hostel in San Diego, which puts out jugs of pancake mix every morning and has these massive industrial ranges for you to cook them on. Huge vats of peanut butter and jam to put on them. Amazing.

One of the hostels in New Orleans, which has a pet alligator in the garden. It's like it's been hit with a shrinking ray, and appears to be good friends with the cat.

Saying that, I'm not too keen on being in hostels on my own. always think everyone is else is going to think I'm some kind of weirdo. Maybe I am in that case.

  • my favourite:

the HI Hostel in Seattle, now sadly closed. Friendly atmosphere, great free breakfast, nicely decorated with good facilities, great 'organised activities' and all that, it was about 5 minutes from pike place market, generally well central.

The day I left, it closed down and it's now being converted into fucking condos.

    • the one under pike place market?

no way :( it was lovely!

      guntrip @brusma | 24 May '08, 11:20 | X
      • yup, it closed

the only upside was, the TV crew came round for the news the day before it closed to broadcast some "isn't it horrible that Seattle's hostels are closing", and I got interviewed and ended up on Washington State TV...unfortunately I missed it cause I was out getting drunk instead, but apparently they spelt my surname right, so well done there

    • proper shame, grat place!

  • stayed in one in berlin

which was awesome, really cheap, had a massive 24-hour bar area where loads of different people were just talking to people they didn't know, nice dorms, and they did your washing for you.

The worst was the stupid draconian one in Rome where boys and girls were segregated, you had to be back by 1am and out by 10am, and the staff treated you like criminals. Never stay in a IYHA hostel.

Do they have good ones in America then? Planning a coast-to-coast trip with some friends next May but really need to do it cheaply.

    OceanStorm | 24 May '08, 11:41 | X
    • yes

      HI ones are really good.

      http://www.hihostels.com/

although i can't speak for dorms as i stayed in a private room! but they were really good. and the seattle one had free breakfasts and free internet.

      guntrip @OceanStorm | 24 May '08, 11:50 | X
      • HI hostels are great

the one in San Francisco up near Fisherman's Wharf is lovely, too. but i did stay in a horrible one in New Yoik.

        brusma @guntrip | 24 May '08, 11:59 | X
        • actually

come to think of it, that crap one in Rome was HI, not IYHA. You'd think they'd all be either good or crap if they were run by the same people, but apparently not.

          OceanStorm @brusma | 24 May '08, 12:48 | X
        • haha, i love fisherman's wharf

did you go to the musee de mechanique or whatever it's called? silent scope for 25c a game, winner!

i stayed in a little hotel in chinatown in SF, i think i was the only white person there :D

          guntrip @brusma | 24 May '08, 12:50 | X
          • ugh, fisherman's wharf made me want to hit things

the only thing i didn't much like about SF

            brusma @guntrip | 24 May '08, 13:12 | X
            • ...but the chowder is so fucking good.

And I saw my ex-girlfriend get attacked by a seagull there. Good times.

            • oh, it's horrific

that's part of the fun though!

  • Hostel 99

    in Cesky Krumlov.

Really friendly, beautiful town, and a free keg for the hostel on a Tuesday (I think) night. Free beer all night, table service. Awesome stuff.

            • Ceske Budejovice

(do you say it chess-kay bew-de-jo-vee-chee?) will be forever associated with The Good Soldier Svejk for me. I might try get out there for a day when I'm in Prague.

              • ..

                it's pronounced more like
                chess-ke bu-de-yo-vi-tse

it's worth going to. plenty more to see in ceska rep than just praha.

I'm off to the Sumava mountains in a couple weeks. sweeet.

                bsoucek @RockNRollMassacre | 24 May '08, 14:14 | X
                • oh also.

Miss Sophie's hostel in praha is literally the most amazing hostel i have ever stayed in. It was like being in trendy hotel! and so cheap! i would recommend to anyone going to ceska republika!

                • All I saw of

Cesky Budejovice was the shopping centre with the bus station on top. I'd have liked to actually see a bit of the place.

                  elpollodiablo @bsoucek | 24 May '08, 14:30 | X
  • where are you?

the best hostel i've stayed in is one right in the centre of Dublin. ridiculously comfy beds but the shower was so cold i was worried i wasn't going to be able to breathe.

  • I liked

The Greenhouse Effect in Amsterdam. The place had a really friendly vibe and it wasn't crowded with the 'Bouncers over for a stag night' idiot types that you usually see walking around.

    Baron_Von_Kevin | 24 May '08, 13:25 | X
    • where abouts in the dam is that hostel?

i've been meaning to find a decent hostel there.

      • check out this link....

        http://www.greenhouse-effect.nl/hotel.html
