China vs Burma

ottermagic [Edit] [Delete] 23:15, 18 May '08

Does anyone else feel like every time they check the news there's this kind of morbid race between China and Burma to see who can get more casualties/deaths? Not that either country *wants* its people to die (though, that's at least debatable with the Burmese govt) but rather that every time one of them announces some incomprehensibly tragic increase in the number of dead, the other will, within a matter of days or even hours, announce an increase at least twice as big. Last time I checked, something like 5 million people have been displaced in China. And at least 30,000 malnourished children face death in Burma unless action is taken quickly.

And because both governments are so restrictive with media access it's very difficult to put form a vivid, human image of this suffering which, without such images, is pretty much beyond comprehension. Each increase in deaths is just a number, completely abstract and without any emotional resonance...

Kinda puts DiSdrama is perspective anyway...
