Depends how specific you want to get. ie can you joke about the holocaust? Yes, if you do it well. Can you joke about the specific experiences of a holocaust victim in front of their relatives? No, probably not.
but there's a difference between getting offended because of your own personal experience, and claiming that because of your experience (or someone else's) then no one can ever joke about that thing.
Massive overreaction. Ignore him.
cause i have noticed before as well that cancer is one of those things that are likely to get this kind of reaction. Which is a bit weird, considering how many aids jokes there are.
it would be pretty dumb though for one person to say you can't make jokes about one of those because it's affected my life, but the other is ok because that's only affected someone else that i don't know
i assume you are referring to people that *don't* live in developing countries?
because technically, i'd say more people know someone affected by hiv/aids, in a global context.
it's very true though.. everyone makes jokes about aids, but it's a fucking horrific disease.
i think it's healthy to be able to find humour in most things though? not on a cruel level though obviously..
it was an 80's thing
Can't really joke about that.
You can joke about paedophilia though. Dunno why that is, but it's true.
it happens on here about 15 times a day
you don't really form an opinion until it affects you or someone you know. Then there's an instant change whereby you end up feeling hypocritical for being really offended by jokes that you yourself might have made, or at the very least laughed at, before. What's unusual about the internet is people are much more likely to tell people that it is offensive, as doing so in real-life has the ability to stop any atmosphere dead and by saying you find it offensive you end up having to defend your position without revealing exactly why.
is pretty common. Loads of rape jokes are.
I genuinely can't remember hearing any! I once saw a seaside postcard with a rape joke - where the blonde, big-boobed victim is enthusiastically helping to identify the suspect in a police line-up - but that's it.
a bit like a darker 4 or 5 magicians.
Odd though it sounds I'm sure some rape victims make black jokes about their experience as humour tends to often be a coping mechamism. In the same way in Nazi Concentration Camps inmates would make jokes to each other as a way of negating the horror of the experience.
Once in physics my teacher was saying how safe nuclear power stations were and I went "Oh well we used to live next to Torness and my mum got breast cancer".
Thankfully my mum was cured of it when I was like 7 and so that statement carries little weight for me cos she was alright yeah?
Yeah but it sounded like i was trying to emotionally cripple my teacher into taking back her thoughts on nuclear power. She was just like "oh..." before i went "Oh its ok she got better!"
Probably in my top 5 embarrassing moments.
and i'm not offended at all.
Partly because i don't know you, but mainly because i'm not a stuck up, precious cunt who's prepared to get on their high horse when i hear something that disagrees with me.
A jokes a joke and if told in the right way, making it clear you're not being malicious, then i don't think anything should be off limits.
i like to use it as a good measure of whether someone will get along with me in the long-term.
if they're not into the twisted sense of humour, it ain't generally going to work out.
one of my best friends did die from cancer, and i'd never be offended by a joke about it.
an how its delivered. It can be damn hard to pull of a dodgey coment and make it so that people aint offended. Some people will just be offended anyway what ever.
not offensive to me.
..was that I thought it could have happened to YOU and I felt really bad. I just didn't think you would joke about it, doesn't meen that it's offensive. It's the problem with the internet.
I'm fine now though. :)
If I started a thread stating that I had cancer, would it be funny? Just a thought people.
cancer is pretty funny.
Probably not if you're experiencing it yourself, but it's certainly fun walking around the house shouting "CANCER!!!" every so often.
Well, it's keeping me going anyway.
My Dad'd got AIDS!!!
cos aids is funny as fuck.
My joke about the chinese man who was distraught because his only son had died in the earthquake went down like a lead balloon at lunch. I don't understand it – all i said was:
'Well, he's probably annoyed because he's had to put a lot of work into drowning his daughters so that he could finally have a boy this time.'
If you can't joke about infanticide, what can you joke about?
But it was obviously a joke, there's the difference.
..that she doesn't have breasts because they were removed because she had cancer.
It's just that for a moment I thought she was telling the truth.
that thread was absolute shite and pretty offensive if you're going to be offended by any kind of "jokes", so i don't think her response was that inappropriate.
i thought it would be obvious. apparently it wasn't. this happens every now and then when you're not face to face.
I'm not annoyed with you or anything, I just wanted people to understand why I reacted like I did. ;D
But everything's got some inherent funnies to it - I really don't think living is worth it but for joking about things that are very serious. We'd all be ITV bulletins otherwise.
