That's actually a largely intelligent article.
just about everything in this article
"But instead of offering these solutions, we have turned the white working class into a national punch-line. We dismiss them as “chavs”, “pikeys” and racists, and jeer at their clothes, voices and names. So we don’t really have the right to act surprised when they vote in a way designed to tell us – as the woman standing in her damp flat, carrying bags of economy-brand food from Iceland, told me – to “fuck off.”"
reeks of snobbish elitism and did spoil the article somewhat for me.
clearly people who shop in iceland are intellectually inferior and easily tricked into voting for nasty people.
I read the article in a totally different light after seeing that, and realised how horrible that writer is.
He's just regurgitating what every two bit op-ed hack writes whenever a BNP councillor wins a by.
I mean, really, who gives a fuck anymore? BNP get voted in, invariably the candidate fucks up massively and is out on his arse within 6 months anyway. No harm done.
The reaction is out of all proportion to the very limited (and temporary) nature of BNP electoral success.
That's what's led to wilma linking this article.
Go on then, what did he say? Bear in mind that I will automatically dismiss it out of hand because who gives a fuck what anyone who isn't from London thinks?
I guess you're not from London then. I can tell by the way you assume that I automatically know which one of the thousands of posts made today you're referring to, like some ignorant yokel.
I'm surprised you didn't mention my age, or some other half-arsed insult in a similar vein.
I'm just pointing out that all this leads on from something else.
Wel written, to the point, and largely what I think my self.
examining the rise of the BNP in generally level-headed terms, i found myself nodding along a lot. yeah, the last paragraph wasn't the most pleasant, but that's the only fault i can really aim at the article
is a very skilled journalist. Good article
"i'm not sure whether anyone who votes for the bnp is intelligent enough to look for another party that could address their problems. if you can subscribe to the views of a party that argues that the holocaust didnt' happen, despite all the evidence...well..."
But I doubt 95% of the general, non-BNP card carrying population who vote for them actually pay any attention to that part of their manifesto.
I'd suggest that you actually speak to some people who've voted BNP about why they did it before you make sweeping statements about them.
Just so you know, I deplore everything the BNP stands for but I also don't think you can dismiss thousand of people in a couple of sentences.
And as is almost certainly the case with Burnley, the BNP exploit certain issues which are important to or have affected the local working classes, e.g. the recent closure of our local A&E or, as I mentioned in the other thread, the aftermath of the infamous race riot.
If the liberals say they want to close our hospital, its hardly unreasonable to oppose it.
She's got it all figured out.
"however, i'm not sure whether anyone who votes for the bnp is intelligent enough to look for another party that could address their problems."
Yep, that's right. Everyone who votes BNP is a retard and a holocaust denier.
Moreover, the fact everyone seems to agree entirely with everything this writer says is a prime example as to why you people aren't going to tackle the BNP any time soon.
If you carry on with this 'they're all stupid or poor or both' approach, more and more stupid and poor people are going to start voting for them. It creates a bigger gap between 'classes' and everyone on a low income is gonna start thinking the BNP is the party for them.
Its all well and good dismissing voters as idiots, but they're clearly growing in popularity. I think that instead of trying pathetic propaganda in the media, parties need to start stealing BNP voters by taking bits of their ideas and leaving the rotten stuff behind - particularly the Tories.
Just to reassess your assumption that all BNP voters are a bit thick
I'm actually quite tempted to tell you to fuck off.
Please - do not even try to tell me why people in my town vote for the BNP. How dare you think you can make an informed comment on local politics from inside your London bubble?
You're as simple and idiotic as 'foreigners r gay's.
so you know that everyone who votes BNP does so because they're a holocaust denier?
I know a handful of voters. The reason they give me for voting them is "we don't want to see the country we love and that people have fought and died for go down the pan, because a government is more geared towards funding immigrants and ethnic minorities".
Your representation for a very large number of people (many of whom are indeed idiots, but many of whom are also very intelligent) is quite appalling, and I suggest you think twice before handing out your judgement on WHY people vote for a certain political party - particularly when its so insulting and disgusting.
There are innumerable reasons as to why there has been a steady rise for the BNP in Burnley, many incredibly complicated.
I'm not attempting to justify it, but to simply right them off as 'thick' is doing them an incredible disservice.
Apologies for the spelling mistakes.
Also, I hope you aren't using it in order to link me with the BNP voters. I may have defended them over the accusation that they are all thick, but I certainly would never count myself as one of them.
You missed my point entirely.
I don't care whose nephew you are...who you know...whose dick your sucking on, you're going out.
tonight where the BBC strangely placed a party in the program called the Democratic National Party dressed them up to be like the BNP and then exposed the councillor as having Neo Nazi links, guilty of murder and torture Found it all very weird.
I am largely in agreement with Hari's article the last paragraph being the obvious exception.
If you read the comments section under the article someone has stated their intention of voting BNP and is also immigrant. Now I don't have a strong grasp of the complex issues of why someone would make a choice of voting in such a way but I do find the aforementioned standpoint slightly disconcerting. Excuse my ignorance.
I thought it was pretty subtle in trying to get its message across.
THE BBC DOES NOT LIKE THE BNP.
THEY ARE ALL NEO NAZIS.
THEY TORTURE GAYS AND BLACKS AND MUSLIMS.
THEY BEAT UP THEIR OWN DAUGHTERS.
THEY ARE REALLY BAD!!!!
but I'm not even exaggerating in that post.
Ask that fellow down there.
The party was even called the DNP.
up the leader of the DNP was exposed as being, for want of a better phrase, the 'so called' brains behind murder and torture. That the was the program in a nutshell. With Trevor Eve melodramtically flying off the handle intermittently.
for an hour did appear to discard the position of political neutrality!
a biased perspective and is riddled with card carrying members of the governing party.
BNP aren't thick or unprofessional. Their recent party political broadcast was very simple and subtly. It gave the message to some that there is a party for white people who care about their country and are worried about the recent increase in immigration. All the main three parties do seem to be fighting endlessly for the centre ground since 1997, if not earlier. The BNP are easily creaming off votes from alot of pissed off white folks, rich or poor. As a 31yr old British Indian bloke born and raised in London this is worrying. The main parties need to address issues concerning the disenfranchised white voter just as it endlessly attempts to reach out to radical Islamic kids. If people feel they are left out or abandoned by the main parties they will inevitably sympathise with such parties as The BNP. But make no mistake The BNP have not changed. They're the same as The National Front were when I was growing up. They've just learnt how to present their bile to the public in a more media friendly way.
which is why I find it bizarre that the mainstream parties haven't followed suit and devised an equally sophisticated response to counter them.
The BNP are even canvassing for support amongst sections of the hindu/sikh communities on an anti-muslim ticket!
