I know there's all the hype and that jazz, but is it actually good?
What flaws are there, if any?
cars handle a bit weird but you fget used to that.BUY IT!!!!
i've been told bad things about the car handling.
I stole a van, tried driving in the rain.. was all over the place. Crashes are pretty amusing though.
no. pretty much the TOTAL opposite.
did you not manage to get it?
and i'll be out doing Boris stuff this evening I imagine.
but I read a review on the Guardian website that said although it's amazing it has a few niggles. Just wondering what these niggles are?
I'll be getting it on PS3, I don't know if this makes any difference.
for cover, during a gunfight.
i say this just on the basis of what i've read in a few reviews, but they did all flag this up as an issue
Also 'out doing Boris', eh? Ouch.
the rest of them WITH ADDED MINOR* IMPROVEMENTS!!!! !!! !!!!**
*not actually played it
**still prefers the original top-down one on the PS1, as the only time I've ever TRULY loved any of them is shooting a policeman, standing in his blood, and killing the other policeman as they came to rescue their dying colleague.
"what are you doing?"
"crashing into this tree"
"yeah, funny innit?"
and another time:
"what are you doing?"
"kicking this guy in the head"
"he's dead already tho?"
"yeah but look at the blood coming out"
Playing the missions back to back early on is pretty rewarding if you're prepared to see it as an 'interactive film' experience.
I know that sounds dreadful but the characterisation, story and graphics are good enough for me to enjoy playing it exactly as that.
Once I've progressed a fair way through the main story I'll start experimenting with roaming about and doing random stuff but right now 'interactive film' it is :)
12 hours of play and 32% through it, and these are the flaws:
If you drive a motorbike and get off it and go into a diner to eat some food with one of your mates then come out, the colour of his bike helmet has changed.
You can't call a taxi from your phone, unless you call your cousin who owns a taxi company. If he's busy and it goes to voicemail, you have to stand on the side of a road waiting for a taxi to go past and whistle it. Or, I suppose, you could call the police and mug them for their car when they show up. (this may be realistic, I don't know if you can call taxis from a mobile in real New York?)
That's it, otherwise it's flawless. There's even a button you can hold down to make your car headlights go full-beam. Completely useless but indicative of the amazing level of detail!
and "the driving sucks" = "I'm not very good at it"
"the cover system sucks" = "I'm not very good at it"
The amount of detail on there is mad. Must be fun to write the stuff though!
I like the cover system, the combat is better than it was. Yesterday I had a gun battle with some bikers in a park, I popped out from behind a tree and shot one in the leg and he fell down going 'aaaaarrrrgghhhh', which was quite funny.
and then ran away.
The workman chased me for fucking miles. For some reason I found this the funniest thing I'd seen in ages. Then I stabbed him repeatedly.
can aim at specific parts of people's bodies is genius. When someone's running away from you and you calmly put a round in his ankle, New Jack City style... so much fun
Also, there's a bit where you shoot a guy off a high building, he falls landing on a car, the car alarm goes off, and his gun goes off as it hits the ground next to him. the detail is unbelievable!
Wow, I have yet to see that!
I hit a person who was crossing the road with a coffee, sending their cup flying. Made me think of pulp fiction.
The method of evading the police now is certainly more interesting, but takes a bit of getting used to.
did you kick him off or pick him up? (i know its really early on in the game)
as I thought Vlad was a cunt.
mindless killing FTW :D
..what were the repercussions of this?
I didn't kill him as I thought Ivan seemed ok, didn't try to attack me or anything. Moral choices etc!
i dont know how far into the game you are though so i will keep schtum
I could imagine opening up a whole set of sub missions later when he re-appears. Can't imagine this happening if he's dead.
Oh, and my wife was watching.
four years ago?
completely different kettle of fish isn't it? HL2 was a corridor-shooter with only limited scope for using the physics, this is an entire open world where everything in it has physical properties. So it's still kinda cool!
maybe 'corridor shooter' isn't particularly accurate, but it was still 'go from point A to point B along this series of streets / alleyways'. It led you past specific areas where you had to use the physics engine in very specific ways to solve puzzles.
The only time HL has gone away from this was a small section of Episode 2, and even then it was a big valley with definite edges, you could only go from one end of it to another, hardly open world.
Don't get me wrong, I love Half Life, but it definitely didn't render the use of physics in games old hat, it kickstarted inventive use of it.
fair enough. Generally in HL2 you had one of three things to do with the physics:
One - fire objects into bad guys.
Two - solve rather obviously signposted puzzle-type situation.
Three - play around stacking up boxes.
And although it doesn't always look like it, HL2 is still a corridor shooter; even if those corridors are more like cunningly arranged series of streets/cliff paths..
that was supposed to be in response to Theo, and pretty much went over what you just said anyhow.
I thought Vlad was a twat so I did it to piss him off.
It'll be nice if there are more choices to be made like that, I've seen a few but none of them have had any repercussions... yet.
Have you met Brucey yet?
before i got a chance to save save him, nailed him as he was climbing up one of the ladders. pretty dissapointed that i missed out on this hanging off the rooftop malarky.
iv just moved to a new apartment in bohan is it?
just driving around admiring the city.how people cant like this game is beyond me.it is perfect.
i just need to go to putney to get it, but i don't care, yayyyy
well, I reserved it online, then got a friend who lives in putney to pick it up for me, so i'm going to go collect it from him. win!
unfortunately by the time i finish work, get there and get back it will be late and I have to put a friend up in my lounge, so no playing till friday.
But 7pm Friday till Sunday = GTA time
because you had nowhere to go?
That was after a brain love gig at NHAC, I saw germlin I think. Good times, crazy homeless times.
Office floors are surprisingly comfortable FYI.
i got a copy through the post today from gameconnection. you should have done the same.
I HAVE BEEN EVERYWHERE I AM SAD NOW BYE
I played it yesterday. Its not different enough.
Multiplayer is almost the best thing I've ever done on a console.
Single player wasn't impressive really. It has potential, but they've basically decided that this is a SERIOUS ENTERPRISE. Therefore, say bye bye to speeding around running countless pedestrians over, and say hello to not being able to drive your car.
few goes on multiplayer and you could tell the difference between people who had a grip on the driving and those who still expected it to be like GTA3,the latter spent most of the game facing walls they'd crashed into after trying to take corners too fast, or wheelspinning instead of accelerating cuz they were 'flooring' it in the wet.
It's not the driving that's rubbish, it's you.
more realistic - no turning whilst braking, acceleration on cars is reduced, you need to think about the corner ahead...
Ultimately more rewarding, swift escapes and deft manoeuvres require greater skill and control, it's edgy and exciting at high speed. Cruising can feel sluggish but that's because shit cars will be sluggish! Steal something worth your while!
(as an added thought, imagine if Dead Rising 2 was on this sort of scale... or if Rockstar tried their hand at the zombie genre !)
Resident Evil - Racoon City would fucking amazing in the hands of R*
I wonder if it'll be released this year..
Resident Evil - Raccoon City that you speak of ??!
I played for about half an hour last night, early thoughts;
* The intro credits were very well done, felt a tad usual suspects
* Driving is hard, but more interesting
* The music is amazing
* It's a lot darker and more 'realistic'
* If you drive really fast in to a bollard you get thrown through the windscreen in a shower of glass
has to be "the journey" theres some amazing classical music on there!
the journey is my least listened to!
My favourite has to be Electro Choc (choc choc)
