IMPORTANT THOUGHT

thewarn [Edit] [Delete] 59 replies 16:14, 18 April '08

Right, you know how the food we eat TENDS to be either hot or cold (e.g. hot soup, or cold ice cream). And GENERALLY we don't like it when food is lukewarm?

WHAT'S OUR FUCKING PROBLEM?

I know there are exceptions (e.g. crisps and cheese are ok at room temperature), but in general people get upset if their HOT meal is cold? WHY???! It's been cooked! It's fine! It doesn't TASTE any better or worse, just hotter or colder.

PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS. I'm off to eat some room temperature curry.

  • It does too taste different.

It tastes *more* when it's at the proper temperature.

      I'LL GIVE YOU MORE!!!

I must admit I haven't tested my theory scientifically. Lukewarm food is disgusting, obv.

  • my mum

thinks this is a big problem, she tells me my dinner is ready. if i take more than 2 minutes to get downstairs and get it she goes mental "ITS GGGOIINGG COOLLDDD!"

    • My mum calls me down before it's actually ready

so I go back upstairs. Then she says "Where are you going? It's ready!" No it's not! I'm right here! I can see it's not ready! STOP LYING!!!!!!!!

That's why I left home. Nothing to do with going to university.

        • I was thinking about this the other day

which worries me slightly, but anyway - I don't think people care about whether their food is cooked at all; it actually is the warmth they like. Hence rare steak.

          Zapsta | 18 Apr '08, 16:20 | X
          • Well...

i don't really care. i eat leftovers without reheating them. i always wonder why other people are so fussy about it.

Although i can understand the texture issue with hot/cold. Like a cheesy dish is probably nicer with it all gooey and less like hard plastic.

And also warm/hot dishes are generally more filling i find...?

But yes, not really bothered. And i LOVE cold soup. Like Gazpacho and Vichyssoise.

            bsoucek @Zapsta | 18 Apr '08, 16:24 | X
            • Yes, good point on

the texture. That DOES make a difference.

        • I agree

Most things warm are just as good lukewarm, apart from anything thats battered/really fatty. Cold congealed fat tastes much worse than hot fat. "Hot fat" made me smile.

        • if stuff isn't heated

or chilled properly, the body/brains reaction is that it's potentially unsafe

          cooking/chilling food kills bacteria etc

the entire human taste system is built around alerting the brain that "HEY, this food contains needed nutrients and isn't going to kill us! Eat it! OM NOM NOM"

          JustJay | 18 Apr '08, 16:26 | X
          • So presumably the human taste

system developed over time, as once we ate meat without cooking it?

It's time to evolve into superior eating machines.

it's true, it's hard enough for us to process cooked meat--that's why it gives people more gas than other foods, excepting really high in fiber stuff.

                    • It's to do with texture

warmer stuff tends to be less brittle and hard and alot easier to stomach, eg Caulliflowers texture chages drasticly when it cools down & its much harder to eat when it has done as its more brittle and less... tender?

like it shatters in your mouth? i'd go with tough maybe.... :-/

but then vegetables are better raw anyways, more nutrients and what not.

Some food it can be alright with though- but generally I prefer cooked food to be warm.

Ocassionally I'll heat up cupcakes in the microwave for that 'freshly baked' feel.

i don't like my cuppa lukewarm. there is point of temperature at which to drink it, that SHOULDNT BE CROSSED!

                        same goes with coffee.
