a visual merchandiser when I grow up.
Shit. Wrong degree, then.
I'm an online merchandiser :)
So what's an online merchandiser??
and make sure everything is correct.
Write copy for the website, edit pictures to make it look nice and make banners/titles and things like that.
Be a bit of a bitch for upper marketing staff when they need stuff doing.
Mess around on DiS a fair bit.
"what are you doing in there James?"
"umm... just some online merchandising mum. DON'T COME IN"
I would enjoy the editing pics & making banners bit....and the being a bitch bit :)
The making sure everything is correct bit...well, I'm kind of doing lots of that at the moment, and I HATE it. But then, I'm really not interested in what I'm doing atm. (I write a lot of quotes in excell :( )
but the geek in me enjoys that. As well as the html programming that I do a bit of :D
For the rest of this week I'm probably going to writing descriptions of furniture (I work for a furniture retailer) which should be quite interesting :)
the last couple of weeks writing spec sheets for furniture!! I work for a furniture manufacturer/distributor - but I work for the 'Projects' team (all 4 of us) - all the 'bespoke' stuff.
We've just been working on a tender worth over £1m..... :S
I'm bored with it. You wanna write my spec sheets?? :)
I take the spec sheets and make them pretty ;)
Which company is it for? Perhaps we deal with you....
I work for a company called Morleys. I do the making the spec sheets pretty too...I would much prefer it if I could do JUST this bit :(
Who are your key accounts with?
Seconique, Bradleys, Julian Bowen, DPA, Parisot.
Personally, I deal with Seconique, Steens, Westminster Teak, Original Bedstead, Earth Imports - heard of any of them?
I've dealt with Westminster Teak in a previous job. Pretty sure I've specified something from Original Bedstead at some point as well....
Earth Imports & Seconique both ring bells, I'm sure I've heard them mentioned.
What's your background study, in order to get into this? Or did you just *fall* into the role? (*for lack of a better word!)
I started in the same company 6 months ago doing customer service and used my knowledge gained there to move 'sideways' into a MUCH better job :)
Other than that, I've got a degree in philosophy and I write music reviews for music websites.
I think I fell into it really, but I think it's something I'd like to do for a while :)
Is that like a shop assistant? You don't need a degree for that.
is that some bollocks wanky non-job that only idiots in london have?
like "marketing" or "pr" or one of those things.
no- it's a REAL job, silly!
But that salary is ALL wrong.
*point to note is that I'm an interior designer already - so it's right up my street.
It was probably the most tedious thing I have ever done in my life ever.
a visual merchandising job today?? What/where was it?? What are you studying or where do you work for you to have done this??
AND - is this really the kind of thing you would WANT to do? 'cos obv, something is gonna seem tedious if you have no interest in it. I really don't think I would find it tedious. At all.
# conducting research based on lifestyle concepts and trends, as well as store and/or regional attributes;
# sketching designs;
# developing floor plans;
# sourcing materials;
# maximising the space and layout of the store;
# using available space to the best advantage
# implementing the designs and plans created by the visual merchandising manager and the creative director, which may involve manual work including lifting, carrying and climbing ladders.
It involved easter eggs. By the end I was so bored I started playing baseball with them.
Also, some woman wanted to talk to me about how cranberry juice is merchandised. I didn't call her back.
looked at how many easter eggs we sold last year. Looked at how much Morrisons are selling them for.
sketched a plan of the warehouse to work out where to fit them all.
told the guy with the computer to order more easter eggs.
put displays of easter eggs fucking everywhere, leaving no room for anyone to move.
climbed a ladder to put some in a high place.
Am I a visual merchandiser?
sitting by the phone. And by 'she' - I mean me! Why didn't you call me back, damnit?!
I really enjoy doing all the stuff you listed :)
because there was a car-jacking in the car park.
that was the other one I was trying to think of.
you're one of 'those' people who hate those 'other' people who describe thier work as 'creative', I'm assuming...?
i assisted on the christmas windows (narnia theme complete with giant aslan..) of the giant toy store i used to work in...
amaze. but hard work!
I'm thinking somwhat past that level.....
seeing as I've been project managing for the last 6 months...would be a bit of a step down. I'm thinking all the planning, background work etc - concept to completion...co-ordinating the team, etc.
however now i recruit/headhunt designers and visualisers for the creative industries...
i wish i was back at the toy shop.
Headhunt me! :)
send us a pm, i'll see what i can do...
that noone ever was
to train them is my cause...
figure out what you meant :)
That would bore me shitless!!
