I'm thinking of going for a week or two... Has anyone been? Do you recommend it? What do I need to know?
one of my schoolfriends lived there for a year, hated it and so came back.
a couple i know went there on holiday for two weeks and left after just a week as they hated it so much.
they were all women, so i don't know whether that has much to do with it or not. i've never been...
The Moroccon Tourist Board is crying out for people like you.....
it's great. we went to cassablanca, which was quite nice, the Mosque is HUGE! but the city is a bit more business than tourist. Fez is cool, the old part is all windy and hilly, and there are bits of old city walls etc, very pretty, the new part is like a mediteranian european city. Marakesh, which is the obvious highlight, loads of soukes (sp?) (markets) and things and trips to the sahara, which i would certainly recommend. and essouirra (sp?) on the coast, a lovely littel atlantic town.
the people there are lovely, though they love to hassle you to buy everything, never say it's your first time there, or they will take you for a ride, and do haggle.
get a guide book though, it will tell you anything important.
How expensive is it to stay and to eat etc? Cos I'm proper skint, gonna do it all on a tight budget if possible.
some places are a bit more and others a bit less, having said that i went in 2002 and it has probably changed a bit since then
We went to the west coast last year - i'd strongly recommend Essouria and the pretty little villages along the Atlantic coast. Do you research and take a rough guide/lonely planet (although IMO they were a little over-the-top with their advice regarding being a woman over there - most of the stuff is just common sense.)
The wildlife is amazing, especially the birds. GO SEE.
The food is lovely.
The people were generally very nice, try and avoid the tourtisty bits as the folk try and fleece you at every opportunity.
Casablanca is just a grimy port and although the Mosque is impressive, you can do it in half an hour.
Marrakech was vile - non-stop begging and attempts to rob you. It also didn't help that I went the week after 9/11 and George Bush kept coming on telly threatening everybody in sight. It didn't go down well with the locals.
And I was ill for about three days.
Didn't care for it, on the whole.
and the two places I'd probably recommend are Chefchaouen and Essouira, which are both a lot more laid back than Marrakesh & Fes etc. Chefchaouen especially just had a really nice 'vibe' about it and if you can possibly fit it in for a few days you should go.
I'd avoid Tangier though - I've yet to meet anyone who had a pleasant time there. Even if you're just coming in off the ferry from Spain and catching the first train out of there you're going to get swarmed by touts.
