but you only move the top half of your torso upwards.

I was thinking of push ups
put your elbows on the floor, raise yourself and just hold it there for as long as you can, i do 5 1mins ones every day, works a charm.
Also side planks for the obliques: weight on one forearm, hold your body in a triangle shape with your other arm pointing towards the ceiling. Hold for 30s per side.
For more efficient crunches, try laying back, knees bent off the floor; put your hands on your thighs before the knees. Raise yourself up so your hands just come over your knees, then slowly back down.
Weighted situps; lay in the above position, holding a weight behind your head. As you come up, lift the weight up and over your head so that it comes to your feet. Then reverse this motion to come back to the start. Or clutch the weight to your chest and try a similar range of motion to the aforementioned 'efficient' crunches.
