every town has its fabled eccentrics, but looking on another forum inspired me to ask the good people of DiS about their local characters (whether or not they actually exist).
One that stands out from my younger years is Eccles' finest, Shotgun Billy, who apparently used to wander into pubs, giving the punters the evil eye before whipping out a pair of imaginary guns, pointing them at a random drinker before putting them back in his pocket, accompanied by another evil stare. I never saw him myself but people I know swear he was real, and anything could happen in Eccles.
At primary school in Crumpsall, the spectre of Wanky Joe loomed large. We used to see some bloke walking through Blackley Forest on no more than a couple of occasions but soon a legend became attached to him - you didn't want to be caught by Wanky Joe since the name said it all. I think that might have been imported from another part of Manchester though.
