all i need to say. until Theo turns up with more of his wrongness.
Seriously. It's refreshing compared to a lot of US TV in that it doesn't demonise drug taking and so forth but it's just annoyingly over-acted.
Twin Peaks can (just) get away with that sort of ridiculous overacting (okay, even it takes it way too far at times) but I didn't really find it endeared me to the characters or the story.
we just don't know how to write them, do we?
I'm being sarcastic.
a bugger you are Prole.
just dull and predictable really and the whole geek cult around yank telly is also yawningly predictable. And also whty can't we 'produce' writers with any 'calibre' on the scale its seems America does? Of course we do but hey if football teams buy 'cheapies' then why don't the tv networks.......
GOD SAVE THE QUEEN!
A CUP OF TEA PLEASE!
If you mean being dead, not so much.
I'm currently watching series 4 again. I don't approve of the whole wholesome Nate and Lisa thing.
as we see later, i think alot of people do what Nate does/did and Lisa does/did, just had to wait to see the whole picture eh
Isn't there 34 new american tv progs on E4 about this? 'My so called Coffin Flies' or 'Dead Like Whatever'?
Sounds like something from TV Go Home, but you'll probably moan about that too?
though Brooker is getting a bit tired now - he's not as angry - TVGoHome was an inspiration
Why does everyone think they're the Beastie Boys circa verse 3 of (You gotta) Fight for Your Right?
Actually as previously noted I would have loved to have lived in America at the tail end of the Eisenhower years, possibly working at Gold Star studios or running an independent label so THERE
good TV is good TV. quiet off with the petty cultural superiority.
you spelt Mum with an 'o'! like those pesky Yanks do! tee hee.
I'm just picky and hard to please LIKE OK BACK OFF BOOGALOO
Isn't that a Ringo Starr single?
Hot cross buns and afternoon clock ticking ennui ALL THE WAY THANK YOU
on a rainy afternoon.
(Actually an amazing picture!)
then. Is it cos I is not from Laarrdon town?
I don't enjoy certain TV shows because you aren't from London. Hurry up and move so I can make use of my digibox again
digibox? We don't have them ooop North.
"HOW DID THAT GOBSHITE GET ON TV?"
It's not a 'universal' show but then probably fuck all is.
It seems to appeal to guys who fancy the arse off the sort of girls the daughter represents a lot more than those who just think she's an annoying brat, maybe... :D
Okay, so you think she's an annoying brat but you still like it. Statistical anomalies are allowed.
who fancy the arse off Nate, yes shallow I know.
This is true of every show. I just think you tend to ignore the bad acting and hammy stuff because of that.
Shit, I do when I watch Star Wars because I want to see BIG SPACE SHIPS SHOOT THINGS!!! FUCK YEAH!
I salute you.
Better than all these, then?:
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Band of Brothers
(I don't necessarily rate all of those but some of them are definitely better...)
Curb Your Enthusiasm and Arrested Development, but I decided to not bother with comedies. Maybe.
Like loosen up
Seriously. At least half that list is ( in some parts entertaining) fluff. 6 Feet Under doesn't rely on a 'twist' every hour or some far fetched intricate plot weaving to make you go 'wow'.
It doesn't even make much sense to even compare it to any of those shows over than it being american and on television, it's a completely different kind of show and, in my opinion, a better one.
They're shows of the last 10 years so it's a fair comparison.
Most of those shows are fell HBO presentations and as such I think have much in common with it.
And appeal for nearly entirely different reasons. It's like equating the 9 o'clock news with Eastenders because they're both on BBC and could be considered amongst the cream of the Beeb crop!
hence why claiming it's the best show in the last 10 years is a silly sort of thing to claim, yeah?
Anyway if you don't think a 'dysfunctional' but in reality massively functional family who talk to ghosts and have the occasional song and dance routine in their imagination isn't an 'escapist fantasy', I'm not sure what is?
It's hardly an ultra-realistic portrayal of life, is it?
That the person making the claim thought in their opinion it was the best show they'd seen in the past 10 years. Which is a fair point not contradicted by putting up a list of shows which are quite different and not really 'better'. That kind of ruined whatever point you're now trying to make!
Aren't all families dysfuntional? Do you not have day dreams or night dreams? Are you completely devoid of imagination?!
I was simply surprised at his choice and put up a list of other great shows from the last 10 years to see if he still thought that after reading through the list.
Not all families are dysfunctional, no. I put that in speech marks because the show acts like this family is BIG TIME dysfunctional, but actually that's a total lie. They're very much functional as a family.
You were the one using 'escapist fantasy' as if the show wasn't. I was just pointing out it was as escapist as anything else, surely? You seem to be determined to set the show up as fitting this incredible niche and yes there are things about it that stand out, but it's not wildly different from other shows, that's all.
The points you appear to have made and why I disagree with them:
1. You think six feet under is shit
1a. I don't!
2. That the claim 'best show of the last 10 years' is a bit of a silly thing to say
2a. Half agree. Except, i think it's clearly an opinion based on all the shows the person has seen made in the past 10 years. You could apply the same logic to a lot of things people say (i.e. 'The best song this year', 'the best song ever!', 'the best post on DIS this week!' etc.) and spend your life disagreeing with a lot of things that don't matter very much.
3. You think that a list of quite different shows are different are 'better'
3a I don't think those shows are trying to do anything remotely similar to Six Feet Under (aside from entertain and being on TV etc.) so it's not comparing like with like. The use of a list of shows which in your opinion are 'better' seems to contradict some of the views that may (or may not) be expressed in point 2. (i.e. that better/worse is always subjective so saying something is better/worse than something else is a bit silly)
4. 'escapist fantasy' = six feet under
4a My point was that the shows you listed contain (amongst other things) a CTU agent saving the world in 24 hours. 6 times. A mafia crimelord who regularly bumps off those who cross him, vampires and the like, a bunch of modern day superheroes, a few crime dramas etc. These are shows people watch generally because they think they're exciting topics and they don't really have much contact with such things in real life. Six Feet under is largely about a family dealing with various ordeals (i.e. death, relationships, day by day living). The abstract scenes are largely to represent a characters state of mind and are thus very different to, say, the character suddenly being able to walk through walls or travel through time. It might be different if in series 4 Nate suddenly joined CTU and went on a terrorist hunt.
5 You seem to be determined to set the show up as fitting this incredible niche
5a Not really, i just think that the shows you listed have a different emphasis/focus on things to that programme. Something as endearingly naff as Ally McBeal probably has more in common with Six Feet Under!
I don't hate it, I just don't think it's that amazing. It's very watchable but ultimately not something much beyond a soap opera that's filmed well and takes some chances.
Meh, look I don't have a clue what the best show of the last 10 years is. I love Buffy/Firefly because they have great writing and characters and certainly a very original idea behind them.
Equally Band of Brothers is an amazing piece of historical drama television. Really quite outstanding. And The Sopranos? Well something again. And fuck me, Arrested Development is just amazing.
So I couldn't pick you the best of the last 10 years because there are too many different things (but clearly SFU wouldn't make my short list). Better than Lost, 24 or Heroes? Yup, but others might disagree. I made it clear when I put that list up that I wasn't backing all those shows.
What makes the majority of those shows I listed, particularly the HBO ones, similar to Six Feet Under is a production ethic, a determination to treat their audience as adults (like I said about how it doesn't imply drugs have to be evil).
I think you'd be surprised how many of those shows are precisely full of 'normal' life things but usually juxtaposed with the exceptional. I have no problem with the subject matter of Six Feet Under not including supernatural/technological things but you seem to have a problem with that in other shows, since you're so desperate to make a point of how 'normal' it is.
But it's NOT a soap opera. It contains fantasist and non-mundane aspect which sets it apart from other 'normal life' dramas. It is still somewhat fantastical in terms of how the characters, backstory, etc. are set up. It is after all an ENTERTAINMENT like everything else. If it was about boring peoples' lives who'd bother watching it?
YOU LOSE! Outrageous.
and they were probably right to canel it rather than drag it out much longer than it needed to, just for tha $$$
All that quintessentially English bloke stuff!
but just imagine it - the beauty of a gentlemen's outfit on us all - well the men anyway.
more like, it's all flexi time and tea and buns, you don't know you're born you lot.
I really hate Little Englandism - is that a word - Theo?
Oh to be in Malverns. as bass player
SFU really was the best thing (I have seen) for roughly 10 years. Brilliant stuff.
I think Six feet under was amazingly good.
A total breath of fresh air that that i was so happy to chance over.
The character insight and devolpment was very good and nothing I have seen has come close.
Theres not many programs where a character would start dreaming/hallucinating/whatever about all the children he's inadvertantly killed from all the abortions his ex's have had.
I genuinely got consumed by this series.
i was utterly drawn into it and subsequently almost destroyed by the last episode.
it took me a few days to recover probably recovering from TV doing that to me... it was very odd!!
