Stuck my card in the machine earlier to be greeted with the message 'Your card issuer has declined your request.'

Now, while it's feasible that the last week has taken me severely into the red, the message you normally get in that instance is the old 'you have insufficient funds for this transaction.'

Other than being totally skint, what other reasons could there be for my card issuer declining the request?
