You gonna come out and dance with me tomorrow?
See you in Corbieres at about 9.
but no doubt unconscious by 11...
Are you beautiful like other claire?
Also: "being a (music) nazi"
We should get along brilliantly. (H)
We're celebrating the fact our exams are OvEr.
I'm talking with a limp, walking with a stutter and must. stay. sober.
I'll be out :/
Ginger boy probably wearing a suit or something, stood with tall three other tall handsome boys. One of us will probably have dick-head trainers on. Don't pay him any attention.
ending up in Venue for Twist & Shout which is well good and if you disagree you're a bender.
but what is corbieres and where is it? i've never heard of it before.
it's always far too hot and full of wankers.
in a basement. Its got a good atmosphere and the best jukebox anyone's seen since the 70s.
I haven't ever really noticed the crowd. I've met and spoke to people every time I've been there though.
corbs is ZERO fun
for people that wear those big wacky rave sunglasses.
You're probably more suited to Fab Cafe or that really fucking shit bar up near Matt and Phred's.
it was rubbish.
though one of the funnier things about Charlies is that it shares a fire exit with Fab, so you can actually sneak from one to the other if you want. Once my friend was kidnapped by Fab though - the bouncers wouldn't let him out!
we'll get him back one day.
live next door but one to charlies...
my doorstep is full of smokers.
chinese mafia tastic.
someone who isn't even old enough to drink is telling me what bars i should go to!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my boss drinks in there. she 'likes music'. it's that sort of place.
it's completely one of those places where 'funky' lower managers congregate after a hard days work down Deansgate.
All the music comes from a jukebox which plays stuff like The Doors and The Smiths and The Beatles and Curtis Mayfield. All-round decent music.
I'll ask them to stick some Broken Social Scene on the jukebox, so as to attract a new, less-friendly, yet more intellectual crowd, with better taste in music.
i've never heard the doors, the smiths or the beatles anywhere else! how did you find such a progressive jukebox in a city that has so few bars to drink in? from now on i'm taking all my advice from you. ESPECIALLY when i want to drink somewhere and listen to obscure bands like norvana at the same time.
but my point still stands
All have ace jukeboxes.
Sand Bar is lovely, I always forget about that place!
That's probably an overstatement, but still.
a bunch of hockey players wandered in with fake moustaches on - I happened to be at the bar at the time and one of them mistook me for one of their own, and began complimenting me on how real my moustache looked, before it gradually dawned on him that I was neither a hockey player, nor sporting a fake moustache.
yeah, sandbar is amazing. i haven't been there is ages but they sell an awesome kenyan larger called tusker so it has a special place in my heart
first uk bar to import budvar on tap.
fucking superb place.
you live on city campus with all the LOSERS! (Burn).
Actually probably because its quite hidden away to the side near ScuBar. Its really nice, you should go there. In fairness, I did only discover it on Monday. Sarah found it by accident last week.
you already sound like a 30 year old - not all modern music has to be Foals and Crystal Castles you know! Though I'll admit you are right, I really ought not to judge bars on their clientele; most of the places I frequent are full of oafish self-important media bellends. But at least the walls have pretty pictures on them.
used to have a really good jukebox.don't know if it still does
is the absolute worst thing in the world to base your choice of bar on. i have hundreds of good records at home. corbieres is basically a cave.
Where do think is good in town these days? I'm bored of all the generic indie clubs and the over packed northern qtr...
and have managed to NEVER ONCE go in 42s or 5th ave so i can't really comment on them. i like the northern quarter but not when it's fucking packed. saying that though, i've been out there on plenty of fridays and saturdays and been absolutely fine with how many people are around. outside the northern quarter my favourite bars are retro, temple, cornerhouse, and without a doubt the best of them all, Fuel in withington. if jukebox is really what matters then retro beats corbs anyway because it has one of those fancy internet connected things. to be honest though, i'll drink anywhere that isn't a cave. temple gets allowed just because it's fucking weird and i nearly got laid in there once.
i was wise and made my excuses and left. yeah, tiger lounge isn't too bad. i quite enjoy fridays in there except that i can't stop my arms flailing about when they play the violent femmes and the people in there don't seem to like how much space i use up.
she was a total butterface who wasn't even put off by the fact that i had no idea who she was even though we worked in the same building (at the time), caught the same bus out to trafford and had met before
and northern quarter bar staff are stupid anyway. winding them up can be a giggle.
Not like those uggers in Retro Bar.
I've not been 5th or 42's in a long time but I don't know how you avoided it in your younger years. Yeah Northern qtr is still where I generally go out but I can't stand it when its queues and packed rooms everywhere. Agreed Tiger lounge and retro are all good. Fuel is one of my favourite bars down that end, used to live in Dids myself. Spend a lot of time in Chorlton these days.
there aren't really any clubs that are consistently good, but Panda Panda, Invest In Property, and of course OMG! (sweeptheleg's night) are all ace. Fight Club normally has a good playlist too but I've never seen more than 10 people turn up!
As for bars, everything sweepy said, plus I'm quite keen on the Bay Horse at the moment if only because the smoking area (where I'm forced to sit with my cancer-loving pals) is warm and relatively nice. The Marble Beer House is probably my favourite, it's about a 5 minute walk up Rochdale road from the NQ but it's worth it.
props to the bay horse
Also I totally forgot One Step More And You Die and Dot Dash from that list.
because the ceiling is low enough for me to hit my head on if I jump, it adds an element of risk to the dancing.
Come on folks, you have missed an essential part of the weekend from your list. The one shame being that the cheap gin and dancing usually add up to the loss of a number of hours memory the next morning. Ah the Star and Garter, so much to answer for...
It's not great but I've definitely had some fun nights in there.
what does it mean when you type ^5???
and no, i won't queue to get in the northern quarter. i hate queueing anyway, with the exception of a couple of gigs or things where there is no choice i will avoid at all cost. it usually just means finding somewhere else to drink. easy.
the fact that it has an onstage girls toilet is amazing.
YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT, BITCH!
i love it!
What’s with the filth on the floor, and the shame I feel the day after going?
I couldn't quite bring myself to say it - but yeah, I really don't understand how but every time I leave that place my entire lower leg is covered in black stains. It totally ruined my white trainers!
stinks and you know it!
stinks of talent and undying, flawless cool.
and being hit in head.
but still rebounding effortlessly
I can see where you're coming from, but the fact that they play Violent Femmes and the banjo duel from Deliverance doesn't really make up for the fact that it's always full of horrible sleazy bastards that hit on all your female friends.
or marker pen?
Night and Day for that.
I have my reasons.
I've tried blaggin in with a copy of Flux or Dazed and Confused but it just won't cut it.
who is coming to meet me at manchester station on 11th feb? i'm going to be scared and alone and probably quite vulnerable.
i can if no-one more exciting offers (Y)
lol - we've got more than one you know! I would go as far as to say we've got 'several'.
you're not on the list.
I was going to invite Sara along too - your loss!
not even klose!!
wrighty: "there's this awesome place!"
everyone else: "it's a bit shit"
wrighty: "you're a bit shit"
everyone else: *lists 5 million better places*
the best summing up of an internet message board thread i've ever read
Shitting hell. I'd rather hit my dick with a hammer than go to that place for a night out.
was full of disabled (mentally, physically and gay) people last saturday afternoon.
i was trying to drink a bottle of wine, they kept talking to me...eugh death.
I haven't had to go there for over a year. And when In did I didn't stay for very long. I think it was for lunch too..
Sand Bar or Fuel wins ever time for me. Or somewhere in the northern quarter that isn't totally horrible.
did that come out wrong?
is my favourite really. Temple is cool and the jukebox is v well stocked. Bay Horse - yes. Fab is only ok on a weekday when they play something like family guy. Night and Day costs too much. Any studenty places are a pain. Cornerhouse bar is good too.
on the wrong side of a bar working an all-nighter. I'm an idiot for forgetting that factor when agreeing to cover a shift..
that you're talking about tonight..but yes, I shall be working at the venue tonight. If you come in, please amuse me on the cloakroom otherwise my brain may implode from boredom.
I prefer to ignore that fact and instead consider the fact that I'm EARNING as a positive. At least I'll be getting paid to do uni work there, so not so shit thanks.
are you joining the manchester party crew tonight then?
I was going to go see Cats In Paris in Chorlton but <reason for not going, of no concern to the rest of DiS>. Is it a genuine thing or just a hypothetical concept?
until people do actually windup grouping together and going out. THEN its a party crew.
i'm feeling boisterous and i'm unusually rich. But i also have nobody to go with. Would you take care of me?
that's a no then?
at about 6 oclock to go to Manc!
What about next friday? I'm in town for my new job party. You about?
in this beautiful here town.
