I'm not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but in yankee films and in the Simpsons, whenever anyone gives out a phone number it always starts with 555.

Is this a real thing, is that what a lot of numbers in yankeeland are actually like, or is it some 'thing' that film and tv producers just do because they're funny like that?
