Goldsmiths Uni vs. Cardiff Uni
It would be of great appreciation and assistance if you could tell me anything about these two universities, and the areas (Goldsmiths being in New Cross).
Advantages/Disadvantages the like.
Anything about everything would be most helpful.
Cheers.

Cardiff ftw
It's a great uni, what course would you be doing?
Apparantly Cardiff has one of the best SU's in the UK, it's bloody massive at least, and the location of the uni and most halls of residence is great, like 10 minute walk from the main shopping area. Plenty of student pubs etc, I've even got a discount card in one of them, yeah man.
This has nothing to do with the uni as such but Cardiff has got THE OLDEST RECORD SHOP IN THE WORLD, how cool is that.
And I find the uni to be really really good, I was sad when I was going home for Christmas because I'd miss going to lectures.
okay
i have friends at both. i think Cardiff is better as an intrinsically social university, but Goldsmith's is better because of London and all the culture and stuff so close to you. Goldsmiths is 'cooler' and more arty, whereas Cardiff is full of really good people minus the pretense.
it really depends what youre looking to get out of university, but theyre both damn fine choices.
I'm doing history
Its quite a tuff call.
Both have positives with little bad points.
I think a coin flipping is in order.
history
damn, I don't know anyone doing history
why not
just visit cardiff, and goldsmiths too if youve never been to london, and see which gives you the better feeling?
educationally i think cardiff is better for a classic subject like History, Goldsmiths is notable for having quite unique and creative courses but that wont really relate to history.
...
You've never been to London? But its the capital city!
my girlfriend's at goldsmiths
the halls are really, really nice. as someone said, lots of 'cool, arty' people, but everyone i've met there is sound.
the area itself is a bit grimey and it's a pain that there's effectively no tube near as the east london line is closed for refurbishment.
they do get some ace bands playing at the SU too: rolo tomassi, yndi halda to name a few. the ammersham arms is just down the road too.
also bear in mind
east london line tube is closed until 2010... went to visit my gran the other week and it was a bloody nightmare sitting on some traffic jammed replacement bus service to get around... would put me of going to uni there.
as for the area, it has improved ALOT, every time i go down there the student population seems to have increased somewhat.
we have
30,000 students and you can walk everywhere important :D
walking
is for winners
it sure is
I've only been on a bus twice since I moved here
Goldsmiths is full of wankers
Last time I went to their SU me & my friend told everyone we worked for the art department of ID & loads of art student wankers bought us loads of drinks because we said we'd look at their portfolios.
On the other hand, Cardiff is in Wales.
Wales
but close to the border, I go to loads of gigs in England, there are cheap trains+coaches to all major places
You'd still have to
hear some Welsh accents though, I'd imagine.
I like you.
I hate
pretty much everything to do with Wales. I'm not really sure why but I'm pretty sure it's because of the accents.
twat
a little bit of racism goes a long way, eh birdling?
haha
I hate most Northern accents too. Therefore I'm obviously the biggest racist in the world. Ever.
bell-end
Meh
I only know one Welsh person actually. Most are English.
That doesn't really say anything about Goldsmiths though
I'm sure a lot of, if not most, people, in any city or university/anywhere would schmooze someone who is 'working' in an industry they'd like to get a step up in. I'd say pretending to work for a magazine and giving false hope to people is a lot more wankerish.
goldsmiths
easily.
London > Cardiff by a country mile. Also Goldsmiths is a pretty ace place.
LOL!
Well, Goldsmiths is in London.
Cardiff is in Wales.
The End.
I have an interview for a PGCE at Goldsmiths
next month. I'm rather worried
Oooh, but if she sees this
big thanks to laura_wolf for talking to me about the course and uni on Saturday, was nice to talk to someone with some experience. Sorry if I babbled incoherently!
This should be a PM...
hi! i went to Goldsmiths,
as did _vikram and chunty.
i really really enjoyed my time there, the halls were really nice, and it had a lovely community feel to it. we always knew everyone hanging around in the union and in the local pubs, so even though it's not on a massive campus, it feels like it. most students live really near to the main buildings, in brockley/new cross.
everyone's blabbing on about the tube, which is a moot point as the train still works (i think) which was better than the tube anyway. it takes 10 mins, if even, straight into london bridge/charing cross.
The train does still work.
The underground being closed makes little difference.
I know quite a few people at Goldsmiths.
One is doing History and is having the time of his life. There's a real 'community feel' around Goldsmiths and everyone I've met has been super fun and there's loads going on in New Cross. I'm hoping to go there myself next year which is another reason to go! Goldsmiths was also the only university to be in the 'cool brands of 2008' list in the independant.
I don't know anything about cardiff.
it was in the 'cool brands' thing a few years ago too.
oh how we LOLd
the reason
goldsmiths gets written about as 'cool' in the press is because alot of jurnalists are ex-goldsmiths students.
retardedly... i never even considered that.
I'd say that's a reason.
Also if so many influential journalists come from there surely it's place in the 'cool brands' list is pretty justified?
also, re: my course.
i did enjoy it. it was extremely interesting and all the courses there seem to take every subject from a different angle to other places. there seem to be a lot of lecturers top of their field there, esp. within the anthropology and media courses. we were taught by lecturers that wrote the books that were like bibles to other unis. i just wish i'd not got so drunk and bothered to go to class.
I went to Goldsmiths
overall it was a pretty amazing experience.
Goldsmith is dominated by art which means on the whole there are alot of arty types and media types in skinny jeans smoozing in the student union. If this is your thing then goldsmiths is probably the best place in the country for you.
There is always lots of cool art things happening and everyone wants to be in a band, or run a clubnight or label, so its great for that. the student union has actually got better, there are nights catering for every taste on the whole.
there are thousands of students though, lots of foreign students, lots of rugby playing dickheads too, so i'm sure anybody would find friends there.
The downside of this for me was because the tutors were so good, the best in the world in their fields in some subjects like mine (media studies) it was quite hard to get hold of them or build up any kind of personal relationship. I sent alot of e-mails that were never answered in my time at goldsmiths.
The general vibe of the faculty seemed to be quite arrogant, it was hard to get answers on occassion, you were made to feel as if you should consider yourself 'lucky' to be there.
this is purely from a media perspective, don't know what its like for history.
New Cross is a bit grimey but it has a fantastic community spirit that i don't think you'd find anywhere else in south london. they have two really nice pubs now (the amersham and the prince albert) and there are excellent train and bus links to central london.
New cross is also close to greenwich and blackheath, which are lovely. Brockley is decent place to live on the whole as well.
the halls of residence are nice.
I hope this helps : )
^ he did too
:)
yo
Im going to goldsmiths as of spetember
What he said...
With the addition that I went there to do music, and ended up in a band with him. :D
Personally, I never had a problem getting hold of my tutors, so I guess that just varies from tutor to tutor... Still, I'd definitely recommend it.
goldsmiths
I went there for a short course and I left thinking that this would be a pretty cool place to go to uni. the train was no problem really and the area though a little dank I actually liked and could easily imagine living there - some nice cafes and pubs and people. Also if I was a history student i think id want to be in london.
GOLDSMITHS
BY ABOUT A MILLION MILES.
I've got friends at both unis. If you want a generic beery lads-night-out type of student experience.... go to Cardiff.
If you want something different, with cool people and an even cooler music scene... go to London.
in Cardiff's defense
you don't have to do the stereotypical student thing. There's enough 'good' stuff here.
