Do you do a job you love? If not, why not?

sam-power [Edit] [Delete] 61 replies 12:19, 25 January '08

I have 0.1% interest in my job.

And it's badly paid.

So I've really fucked up somehow. But, y'know, you have to hit rock bottom before moving on.

What about everyone else? Some heavy posters are on here, all day, 9-5, and i think in my ideal job I'd have no time to post on DiS. If you're on DiS so much, do you despise your job?

Quarter-life crisis. etc.

  • I don't mind mine

but only cos my boss smokes more than i do. small things.

    onearmedjizzer | 25 Jan '08, 12:21 | X
    • i quite enjoy mine.

it's not something i'm gonna be doing forever, in fact only another two weeks, but it's bringing in the money, allows me to be on here whilst listening to Lions very loud too.

      • I love mine

I do freelance motion graphics for TV.

To get to this stage though I spent a good few years being paid fuck all and treated like a little bitch.

        • so

how is this going for you? It can't be the easiest job to get into?

    I'M AN OFFICE WORKER

    I don't want to

  • yeah, i totally hate my job

but it's really a small part of my life. if you ask 'what do you do?' then you hear about my clubnight and my band and the occasional (rubbish) writing i do for a website. my job just funds all that.

    sweepthelegdidsbury | 25 Jan '08, 12:26 | X
    • but couldn't you turn your hobby into your job?

i guess that's the ambtition i want- to turn my hobbies into my job. that's what the happiest and fulfilled people i know do.

      sam-power @sweepthelegdidsbury | 25 Jan '08, 12:29 | X
      • i know what you mean

and it'd be great if i could do it. i don't know why i don't really. maybe i'm too lazy, maybe i'm already having enough fun out of these things (that's A LOT of fun)
if you have a job offer for me that involves being in a band, doing a club night or writing and you'll give me £16k pa then send it this way though ;)

    • it wasn't the easiest job to get into

I was a runner for just over a year, then worked my way into the graphics department at a production company. It was a combination of hard work and pure chance that they needed a designer and I'd taught myself enough to be able to do the job. Check my work!

      • I wouldn't say I love it

but I do really enjoy it. I get to do lots of cool stuff. Plus they pay me over the odds for my level and experience so I can't afford to leave

      • I love my job

I'm basically able to spend most of the day fucking around on the internet, while still doing my job reasonably competently - and the work itself is quite fun and fulfilling.
The pay's not bad either. I am such a jammy cunt.

        bumlord | 25 Jan '08, 12:30 | X
      • I'm quite content with my current job and love the people... and most of what I do...

It's not what I dreamt of being when I was a little girl, but you know...

My current job is actually a stepping stone to where I want to be long long term so it's all a path. I'm just happy I am on the RIGHT path because I spent too many years working in corporates getting paid really well do to jobs that were soul destroying surrounded by people I could never 'be myself' with. I've got a brilliant compromise now.. and am on the road to setting up on my own one of these days in the not too distant future... (fingers crossed and a bit of planning in place)..

      • Mine's alright.

I never had much ambition beyond working somewhere I could listen to the radio and not have to wear office clothes anyway.

Took over my life. Not worth it.

Get as much money for as few hours as possible and enjoy the rest. This is what I have learned.

        • pretty much this ^

my job is a bit dull but it pays well for the bare minimum 9-5 with an hour off at lunch. It's not stressful and I have all my own spare time. Haven't quite figured out what I want to do long term but it will suffice for now

          Ruby_Tuesday @tippimit | 25 Jan '08, 12:37 | X
      • the upshot surely is that

if you enjoy what you do you're motivated to get to the top of your area of work and then you're pay will get better :)

          sam-power @thephotobooth | 25 Jan '08, 12:44 | X
          • it was horse shit

and I quit after two months. One of the final straws was having a spelling test, in which it emerged that about 80% of the class didn't know how to use "their" "they're" and "there" correctly. The lecturers were disorganised and useless, and some of the people on the course were irritating beyond belief. Now going to Bristol to do languages in October. Moral of the story - don't do a journalism degree, do a masters in it after studying something else.

      • I quite like my job

I don't want to stay here forever though. It's more or a tactical step into a new career direction or summat like that.

It's quite poorly paid but I'm happier here than in the really quite well paid job i was in before, which i wasn't particularly interested in.

      • the work I do is pretty dull

but the pay is good and to be honest it's a piece of piss. Plus, getting time off is rarely a problem - which is why I'm off today.

The only real irritation is that they're only giving us short-term contracts (of three months, usually) in case the BBC's iPlayer project goes tits up, so I can't make plans too far in advance.

      • its all subjective to what you had before i

guess... Right now im in north england 30k, listen to music, any clothes i want to wear i wear, people are friendly, little stress.

I looked into doing what i wanted to do for a living and it had to be done in London on 12k pa working 7 days a week with 2+ years making tea. I did it for a while in austalia but the level wasnt the same nor the prospects.

Soo I'm earning money and spending it on trying to come at my dream job from a different angle.

will it work out, who knows but ive seen alot of the world cos i had £ to do it and learned alot more doing it all alone.

        The missing part contacts :(

      • Personally I hate my job

I'm a software analys/tester. I didn't mean to become one but for a few years my life was a druggy haze and I just kinda went with the flow leading me to this career path.

It pays ok but the work is boring and because its high level IT most of the people who work in this industry are boring cunts who live for their job.

I did have a great job once, I was a sound engineer for a pretty good Studio. I loved the work but the pay was awful and it was usually 12-18 hour shifts. It also made me realise that everyone who gets a small bit of sucess in the music industry instantly becomes a prick.

I'd like to maybe go back to it one day but I'd wanna finish my degree first and be a producer rather than a sound engineer.

        cunt | 25 Jan '08, 13:41 | X
        • Can I ask how

you got into studio work? I've been trying for ages to try and get some sort of live sound work but I'd happily do studio stuff. Is it all still about who you know rather than what you know?

          young_turk @cunt | 25 Jan '08, 13:59 | X
          • I have a diploma in sound engineering and music technology

and graduated top of my class so I got employed by the colleges sister (professional) studio pretty much straight away as it was owned by the head of the college.

It is pretty much who you know in that business but you have to have the skills to back it up.

My advice would be to either take the time to study music (Don't know about the UK but here it costs bout 5000 euro a year to go to a proper college, but it's worth it, find somewhere thats internationally recognised and will also let you sit C+G exams. There's a lot of places that will do courses but their really just glorified day care centers designed to take money away from guillible music fans)

Or go to a studio and see if you can get a job as a tape op (shit pay and mainly involves making tea) and work you way up.

If you are interested in live work, approach a venue and see if ypu can get a job as a rigger/rodie. You're gonna have to start at the bottom unless you get very lucky, and luck will only get you so far.

            cunt @young_turk | 25 Jan '08, 14:37 | X
        • This is exactly

what I do, similarly most of the people I work with are devoid of social skills and pretty much boring knobheads.

          Ricky_Ronco @cunt | 25 Jan '08, 14:04 | X
      • It's reasonably satisfactory.

I wouldn't say I love it. The good thing is that there is no pressure or stress involved in my job, so I completely forget it when I'm not working. It just earns me the money that I use in my non-working life.

When I was unemployed I was so bored and had no money to do anything, it's much better having a job thats not exactly exciting, than having no job at all.

Also I get to post on DiS, I don't when I'm realy busy but Friday's are usually a bit slow after lunch.

      • I don't work full-time

Being a student an' all, but I do love my job here at uni...

I've had a few jobs over the years and this has to be my favourite.

Work in one of the hall bars, with an absolute legend of a boss - we're permitted to drink on the job, particularly on high days and holidays when all the staff working get in on the party action.

When my boyfriend arrived at the bar the first night back after Christmas, he was presented with a shot - that I was told to choose for him - completely free of charge.

It's actually one of my favourite places to be, specially given that as the years progressed I've got chummy with most of the regulars :)

        *Is excited about working Sunday...*

      • In don't mind my job.

Beause I'm at college as well, I'm only in three or four shifts a week. Which are really flexable, so if I want a day off to go to something I can almost always get it pretty easily. It's easy work and the people there are a good laugh. The only bad thing about it is the rubbish pay really.

I'm not working there for my career or anything, it's just to earn money while I'm a student.
