I've just found a cheque from 12 months ago for £70. Do you reckon I can still pay it in?
it is 6 months but try it anyway, you never know
and they don't accept it, will I get charged?
the most they will do is return the cheque to you
unless you're very lucky and no-one spots it, it'll be returned unpaid.
checking stuff like that was just one of the thrilling tasks i performed in my first post-uni job...
i work for a bank, the 6 month expiry doesn't exist anymore but the public was never really told so you can pay it in. there's a chance that whoever wrote it out will have put a cancel order on it so when a cheque with a matching number/amount tries to go through their account is gets returned as unpaid. if this happens you could well get charged. bounced cheques going out of your account can cost as much as £35 but if it's one going in then, depending on your bank, it'll be somewhere in the region of £0-£5.
if the cheque is from a company/uni or whatever then get in touch with them and get them to reissue another cheque. they should be legit enough to send you another one. if it's from a personal account then just try paying it in. chances are that they won't have bothered to put a stop instruction on it and they obviously meant to give you the money if they gave you a cheque.
or i agree on the advice on what to do.
although i believe some banks still don't accept cheques more than 6 months out of date. but it's worth trying it.
It was actually from a mobile phone cashback thing which is REALLY annoying. So it's a company cheque (Carphone Warehouse). They probably pretty unlikely to reissue it aren't they?
if they don't, then that'd be another reason for me to badmouth them, as i often do: i've never been in there an not felt like someone was trying to con me.
but they probably put some sort of time limit on those deals. ring them and find out, i guess if you kick up enough of a fuss you should be able to get them to do it.
never got bloody cashed...oh how we laughed
