I've noted recently that a lot of hip hop tracks deal with the issue of fathers, absent or otherwise. I guess that this is to do with the fact that rappers tend to look more closely at the social fabric of life than other artists (fuck that sounds pretentious), but I wonder why you don't see that trend repeated so much by other genres of music.

Indie or alternative seems to have a fair few songs to do with mothers and grandmothers (Standing on the edge of summer by Thursday being my favourite example) or girlfriends obviously.
