I give him one more year
Actually, I'm not sure if it's that he's unfunny, or that he's an objectionable prick
i think the fact that there isnt really a huge amount of difference between his real persona and his acting persona is one reason why alot of people cant understand why everyone bums him so much, and dismiss him for not really being a true comedian.
just hearing him laugh at something usually makes me laugh though. particularly if it involves karl pilkington
With people like Jimmy Carr, Russell Brand and co still being held up as comedy geniuses.
is well funny. Have you watched Ponderland or his stand up? Funny.
And I hope I never will.
you massive twunt
seen him on other things like 'Big Fat Quiz Of The Year', Big Brother's Big Mouth and Have I Got News For You and drawn his own conclusions... like I did.
What he said
is like a child with a learning disability "I'm loud, pay attention to me, my dad has a brown willy, I used to do crack"
I also hate the way some people think he is a fashion icon when he wears the same clothes all the time.
Few people can be funny by just being random
whenever he's on telly he's an insufferable attention whore. in more casual/natural settings, like his radio show, hes quite funny
his comedy style is basically just like peter kaye.
'isn't it funny how... *insert description of thing people do*' repeat x 100.
except PK talks about old ladies in shops and RB talks about wanking off dogs and things.
Neither of them is inherently insightful or even that creative.
They are both funny though.
russell brand is absolutely hilarious
and i found it rather entertaining. i admit he certainly no stand up though
I'm already counting down
Because he's definitely funny, so stfu.
They did really, really well in creating enough characters for us to laugh at, empathise with and root for
They failed massively at that with Extras, in my opinion. In the Christmas special there was pretty much one moment where I laughed out loud, and that's only because Clive Owen said "fuck off", and because I'm immature like that
who utterly hated the Office?
This is possibly because I don't find embarrassment comedy funny, just embarrassing, ie. Borat, some of Alan Partridge, Extras. It just makes me cringe and I hate that, gimme the Boosh or Spaced anyday!
The Gervais penned episode of The Simpsons is basically The Office transplanted into Springfield. His own character is even an almost direct copy of David Brent.
He was always better as a comic actor. I think he's very good at telling a story and so he works well on the radio, but, I don't really like the way he goes about doing those vast stadium comedy gigs that he's now doomed to.
...has anyone ever really pulled off the whole stand-up in an enormodrome thing?
tried and failed
abandon reply forever ban request
backin vocals for Cher!
but didn't Lee Evans play some successful gigs at Wembley Arena?
It was pretty funny, one of the funniest stadium stand up acts but he repeated alot of his material and it went on for 1hr too long.
It was really funny, and surprisingly dark in places. That said, apparently him and Stephen Merchant can't stand one another now (gossip!!!) - that would explain why there wasn't a single scene in the xmas episode where they were both in the same room.
the one where they were.
There weren't many though, were there? Were there? To be honest I was in that christmas period overindulgence-hole so I probably wasn't thinking too clearly.
he didnt invent him!!!!
and exposed him
yet still manage to do well for themselves. and his is a different kind of stupidity.
PILKINGTON IS REAL
im sorry but you are wrong. iv seen interviews with karl where he does seem like a normal chap, but the beauty of gervais is that he askes the right questions. have you heard all the xfm shows from the start? did you see comedy lad with karl pilkington going to talk to academics like wil self and a prefessor of london universtiy? it was amazing.
he has one gcse and his attendance at school was horrific. he is not totally stupid, but he is totally ignorant and has so few reasoning skills its frightening. but he really is like that. its just that gervais and merchant ask him the right questions, existential questions on evolution and humanity etc.. i am obsessed with him i think hes brilliant, and one in a million
as radio producer required little specialist knowledge. (As gervais and merchant frequently pointed out during the shows)
i dont mean to sound like a prick, but me and my mate have virtually studied him since we first heard him on xfm. so few people really think that he is like that. even critics of the xfm shows got it totally wrong, and gervais had many laughs at the fact that these critics thought the shows were actually scripted, when they were anything but.
loads of people come across like him, he just thinks differently, and this only comes across when you ask certain questions, not how he is.
but the thing is that the aspects of his persona that gervais and merchant brilliantly expose are nothing to do with his ability to learn a trade like production, which by all accounts he must be good at, after he started in hospital radio that's all he did so he ought to have gained some knowledge and experience.
he also meets wil self and germaine greer in this show, but these are the best two interviews he does
with the schmaltzy shit like that extras christmas special, he can still be funny.
Yes yes the office finished in a similar way, but that was written well. Extras was fucking crap.
Classic backlash bollocks.
People can, y'know, change their opinions on something/body once they are exposed to them a lot more
The Office was brilliant. But since then in my opinion nothing he has done has come close. And seeing him on chat shows is possibly the most infuriating thing in the world
his tv is funny, his stand up isn't really. Simple and nothing's changed. Get over it.
at what he has done with the Office and Extras. It's almost like a real time parody/satire of his own rise to fame/life, particularly Extras. He has stuck to the 'write what you know about' mantra well and its worked. Not seen any of his standup mind...
I am not a big fan of his stand up but his tv programmes are brilliantly observed and funny.
dont knock that!
At christmas at my inlaws a relative said 'Did you watch Extras?' and I politely replied 'No, I find Ricky Gervais deeply repellent' which made the room go silent for some reason.
The only people that truly appreciate him are people who think they're cleverer than they are. Most people pretend to like him cos they think it's edgy.
He's hardly the thinking man's comedian is he? Nor does he profess to be anything like one.
is amazing even by the usual high standards of the British "scene".
Like many others have said in this thread: Office - great, Extras - pretty great, standup - not so great. I don't get why he attracts so much ire. Maybe he wouldn't if he wasn't so involved in "celeb" stuff, I don't know. But I don't think his body of work is at all "unfunny".
Stand up is admittedly not brilliant, but Karl Pilkington is really his master work.
else ill get angry. haha. (big kp section in middle of thread)
Tweeloser said he actually met him. He's obviously a creation, or at least exaggerated on purpose. It's obvious. You can see the lines being set up.
im not reiterating but, for example, the interview he did with lauren lavern (spelling?) is an example of him appearing perfectly normal, and nothing out of the ordinary. the genuis of gervais (in a nutshell) is that he exposes karl by asking him the right questions.
i dont think we all could though! some of the stuff he comes out with is staggering. its just ignorance and lack of reasoning on a massive scale. but then the best stuff is usually when, as i mentioned above, he is asked about the more existential and thought provoking topics.. and also when he queries a point in an argument that is totally irrelevant
loads of people can come across normal, just when you get into more abstract thoughts, they come across as complete buffoons. you can hear in some of the conversations his mind just cant comprehend some things
Extras: really good
Stand Up: not that great
Podcasts/Radio with Pilkington: Brilliant
Him as a person: Bit of a bellend
just is prone to being a tit at times
gervais says something, then - 'look at his face! it's as if iv just said that in hebrew!' or something. brilliant
he knows what a 'Karl Pilkington' answer should sound like, though, and therefore plays up to it. I'd rather believe that he's totally genuine, though, and take comfort in the fact that he actually might be!
he plays up to it a lot in the later XFM shows and podcasts, but for most of it, especially the early shows, it's genuine. A little bit like a performing monkey if you will!
so this thread is flawed.
at all - he's just smug. But Russell Brand is startlingly intelligent and articulate. I don't really care if he's funny or not. I just like the way he sees the world.
