I just received a letter from sainsbury's (him with the foppish double barrelled surname centric)

lemonbrickcombo [Edit] [Delete] 27 replies 14:01, 9 January '08

Extracts:

"Dear Mr XXXX,

Over the next few weeks you may see programmes on the television or read articles in the press about the farming practices used for chicken and egg production.

...Currently all the fresh and frozen chickens and eggs we sell are British and we are one of the few retailers who can make this claim.

...In December we were delighted to win two out of three awards that the charity, Compassion in World Farming presents to the major supermarkets for their commitment to the welfare standards of farm animals.

...You may have seen in the press that we plan to stop using eggs that are produced by caged hens by 2010... In addition we are working closely with both the RSPCA and the Woodland Trust to make significant improvements in our chicken production methods."

Shit, he's really put it up them, ain't he?

  • but they refused to take part in Jamie O's thing

because they still use chickens that cry

    HeartbrokenStar | 9 Jan '08, 14:03 | X
    • yeah, it was interesting on re-reading the letter

how much you realised it's a bit of a smoke and mirrors tactic. They don't actually guarantee they'll stop using battery farmed chickens....

      lemonbrickcombo @HeartbrokenStar | 9 Jan '08, 14:04 | X
  • A woman at work the other day

was talking about that show. She confused the terms 'battery farmed' and 'battery operated'. I hadn't even realise you could get electronic chicken

  • the other day i meat

      lemonbrickcombo @harru | 9 Jan '08, 14:09 | X
      • Oh yeah, you work at Tesco's

I worked there for three sickening years. Semper fi, brother.

        lemonbrickcombo @lemonbrickcombo | 9 Jan '08, 14:10 | X
        • "semper fi"?!

is that some kind of Tesco Masonic-esque password?!

          Moscow2 @lemonbrickcombo | 9 Jan '08, 14:11 | X
          • It's what marines say to each other.

            I was being ironic.

            lemonbrickcombo @Moscow2 | 9 Jan '08, 14:12 | X
            • I was

              too :)

              • *hangs head*

  • ace

they're well scared. At least the chicken bit is good news.

    nice_squirrel | 9 Jan '08, 14:10 | X
    • by 2010 though!

i spose the joy of wandering aroung outside makes up for being slaughtered for our delight.

      gamecat @nice_squirrel | 9 Jan '08, 14:12 | X
      • and that's only egg laying ones

        not the meaty ones.

        lemonbrickcombo @gamecat | 9 Jan '08, 14:13 | X
        • apparently

they just have chicken exo-skeletons to lay eggs. saves room

          gamecat @lemonbrickcombo | 9 Jan '08, 14:14 | X
          • I don't know why

but exo-skeleton makes me think of the Alien Series.

            lemonbrickcombo @gamecat | 9 Jan '08, 14:15 | X
            • my egg on toast

exploded out of a chickens chest. darn it, why cant i be vegan?? (nb. because i am lazy)

              gamecat @lemonbrickcombo | 9 Jan '08, 14:23 | X
  • ...

You ever notice how no-one ever picks up on supermarkets and other companies constant claims to use/sell only British fish, beef, chickens, eggs, potatos, etc in order to pander to the gen-pop's low level xenophobia?

Who gives a fuck if a chicken is British or not?

    Stealthy | 9 Jan '08, 14:12 | X
    • ^exactly

they tout it so much, when the real problem is how these animals live, not where they're from.

Are British Farmers renowned for being less cruel?? Think not.

      lemonbrickcombo @Stealthy | 9 Jan '08, 14:13 | X
      • well

if britain has stricter animal rights then you can chose to eat those rather than where the animals are more likely to be abused? And transported badly (though i spose once they are dead)

        gamecat @lemonbrickcombo | 9 Jan '08, 14:15 | X
    • it appeals to both

flag waving idiots and food mile counting hippies. they can't lose.

      harru @Stealthy | 9 Jan '08, 14:13 | X
    • i thought

food just had to be packaged in the UK to count as british?

Also, so it'll take 2 years to change your egg suppliers and you'll still sell broiler chickens? What's the betting this'll get forgotten soon enough.

gosh, their a bit concerned aren't they?

      Lozzy @Stealthy | 9 Jan '08, 14:20 | X
      • ...

That is to some degree true. I remember Tesco getting caught out there a few years ago when it emerged they were selling Brazillian beef as 'British' because the packaging was made here or some such thing.

Not a far leap to assume that other companies do the same thing. Like McCaine's 100% 'British' oven chips. My entire arse they are.

        Stealthy @Lozzy | 9 Jan '08, 14:27 | X
        • yeah

that tractor thing just means it lives up to british standards, not that it is from britain. mmm, misleading.

          gamecat @Stealthy | 9 Jan '08, 14:31 | X
  • ALL battery eggs

are to be banned by the UE by 2012. britain has always been in favour of this (other countries have said it was too soon). So well done Sainsburies, a whole 2 years ahead of schedule!!!

    gamecat | 9 Jan '08, 23:58 | X
    • Seriously?

      That's brilliant news!
      No more sad eggy chickens!
Now only the sad meaty chickens to sort out.

      yes_ @gamecat | 10 Jan '08, 00:03 | X
    • ...

      The UE?

      Stealthy @gamecat | 10 Jan '08, 08:57 | X
  • I have to deal with sainsburys.

    They is fools.
