Do people only vote once or do they vote once per party?

I guess the latter is a bit silly since traditional Democrat voters would also vote for the least apprpropriate Republican candidate and vice versa. But what if you were fence sitter and you wanted to see how both parties did and then pick when they'd each got the candidate you considered best?

After all, it's not like there's much to pick between the Democrats and the Republicans, is there?
