And why do I feel so uninspired?
but i do know chinua achebe thinks heart of darkness is racist.
havent read it myself.
but agree that it is racist.
in not the way of making the Africans extensions of the environment that Achebe described?
that by making africa a backdrop to one "petty european's breakdown" the novel is racist because:
1) 'darkness' is not simply confined to Africa in the novel. the only things that are theatrically dark in the novel are the things which have been tainted by imperialism.
2) why shouldn't he use africa as a backdrop to explore psychology if that's what the novel sets out to do? nobody complains that danish people are degraded by using denmark as a backdrop to explore hamlet's breakdown and yet ordinary danish people never play a big role in it
is exoticised, even if it does touch everyone.
of blaming authors for embodying or reflecting the attitudes of their time, particularly if like conrad, despite their failings, they were challenging these attitudes in some way.
the fact that marlow is telling this story to the four travellers who represent, more or less, erm... something about moral society enhances the distance between them/the reader and kurtz.
and something about starting the story at the end and modernism. erm.
and something about conrad's artistical aims in that preface to something he wrote.
wow, that was rubbish :D
,if you haven't already, "Exterminate all the brutes" by Sven Lindqvist. Gives a good historical perspective on the book.
you're so wrong, it actually hurts.
