Lust, Caution

omgz go and see it. It's just so amazing! It's the new film by Ang Lee, and it's about a Chinese girl in WWII (when China was occupied by Japan) who agrees to seduce a man who is acting as an informer for the Japanese, then her friends in the resistance can assassinate him. And it's beuatiful and tense and shocking, and at the end I just sat there feeling pretty stunned by the whole thing. Ang Lee said it's a kind of counterpart to Brokeback Mountain, and I can see that.

For people who've been put off by the reviews that describe it as an 'erotic drama' - it's about sex, but about lots of other things too - there's not much more sex than Brokeback Mountain really. It's pretty suitable to watch with your parents.

For people who are put off by nearly three hour long foreign war films - you see a gorgeous Chinese girl naked!!!!111!11

  • I'm torn now

A few things I read made me think I could really like this, but, on the other hand, I think I was one of about ten people who thought Brokeback Mountain was really poor.

  • you're joking, right?

there's about ten minutes of highly unerotic gymnastic sex. the rest of it (around two hours and 20 minutes) is tedious, unbelievable, frustrating tosh that not even tony leung can save.

this was one of my big cinema disappointments of 2008.

    • haha

i know! but i've seen a few previews of other 2008 films. i was really looking forward to this - tony leung + ang lee seemed like a match made in heaven.

also, note to male directors: violence doesn't necessarily equate to passion, ok?

      • or should that be

passion to violence. hmm, i'm going back to bed.

    • hmmm maybe

I haven't really really liked an Ang Lee film since Ride with the Devil.

    • I'm really very excited

about seeing this, I love Ang Lee.

    • hmm interesting

i might go see it tonight; i did like brokeback mountain, and the cinematography does look gorgeous (from the trailers).

    • hands up

who thought Ang Lee was a woman called Angela for ages and ages?

      harru | 7 Jan '08, 14:29 | X
    • Just saw it

It's fantastic, utterly absorbing and it really flew by. I'm Not There, which I saw last week, was shorter but felt twice as long.

More thoughts in the morning when I'm not so tired.

      • haha

i just came back from seeing it too. hmm, it's a great story but, dunno, somehow i'm not entirely satisfied. i'll go & have a think about it now.

and also, i'm not so sure about "not much more sex than Brokeback Mountain" in the initial post ^..
