nothing even comes close.
Can't see it being repeated tho.
Is not only the greatest sitcom of all time but the greatest TV show of all time.
But I do love SEinfeld and Curb!!!
Next question please.
beats Seinfeld hands down. Seinfeld was pretty good though, especially for its time.
Gob riding his funny scooter is worth the prize alone
having only seen two episodes, I am potentially unaware of its greatness.
but still, Seinfeld is unbeatable.
what am i missing?
It's chock full for a sitcom, very funny and clever. I don't know, I'm shit at describing things. Just trust everyone who's named it and check it out. And definitely start at the beginning.
the greatest show of all time that gets better and better every time you watch it.
Go get for Christmas!
is it on tv anymore?
It got cancelled, but you can buy/rent it on DVD or download it bootleg.
but after that, it all got a bit boring.
but I'm not sure I understand all of the praise lavished on it.
SEINFELD is the best.
maybe Im not jewish enough?
as are the 'moops'
Look up Smallville and see who one of the producers is.
I would've choked on my coco pops, had I been eating any.
only to arrested development.
Larry David is a mad genius!!!
sienfeld no contest.
The answer is Friends.
It has the same warm homely feeling as Neighbours.
Then Curb, just starting to get into Sienfeld.
are you from Glasgow?
Are u mon frer, thats french for brother. I don't know why i know that, i took spanish for 4 years.
great minds think alike.
then Seinfeld. If UK, Fawlty Towers.
with someone else. It was odd being self-conscious about my usual 'laughing-lots-and-not-caring' thingy. Or whatever. Abandon face.
Best Sitcom Thread'
that or Friends.
I'm asking for the complete seinfeld box set for my birthday/christmas.
Dissertation VS over 50 Hours of Seinfeld
1-0 to seinfeld...
Plus any sitcom that namedrops Pavement, features a performance from the Butthole Surfers, as well as cameos by Steven Wright (amongst others) is alright by me.
Arrested Development is pretty gash
Is brilliant, quite surprised someone who digs Larry Sanders doesn't like Arrested development.
fast cut nature of the whole thing. It zips along at this pace that I guess I'm just not comfortble with. Plus I find the main character really bland (Jeffrey Tambor just about saves it though)
Whats not to love about that guy!?
I could watch him in anything.
is the main character. And he is a bit bland, but it doesn't matter. He centers and grounds the whole thing.
he's cuttingly DRY!
Unclear on the concept of a 'straight man'?
to write a list of 'Things that make me uncontrollably laugh' right now, it'd be HAHHAREALLYLONGCAPITALISEDWORDSLIKETHISSTARTINGWITHAHAHAHA
and Hello Operator jokes.
Seriously. Although I hate it when you ask someone if they've seen it and they haven't. They instantly assume you are a perv.
Does that count as a sitcom, though?
Mad Brian the artist crack me up as does Tyres.
Nothing even comes close. Seinfeld is 2nd though.
Tom and Barbara? C'mon!
For me Spaced is, and shall, remain the best of the best. Followed shortly by Arrested Development, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which, for those of you unfortunate enough not to have seen it, is hands down the best new US comedy since AD got the chop.
or Peep Show. Blates, you might say.
I think I know most of it off by heart. then Peep Show (Has a lot of the same actors as Greenwing)Spaced, Farty Towels, and yeah, you can always rely on friends the volvo of sitcoms.
I Completely forgot about Green Wing. Absolute genius, definitely in my Top 5.
In my not so humble opinion,
Alan Statham is one of the greatest comedy creations of our time.
Is that a sitcom?
If so, nothing comes close to the first series.
yeah, that was really funny!
all the way!
and if not that, then scrubs! yeah scrubs... it's amazing!
1. League of Gentlemen
2. The Office
3. Larry sanders
Also, how come US sitcoms have about 20 episodes a series and they make about 10 series (usually all quality)....but the UK ones are all out of ideas after 2 series of 6 episodes!
US sitcoms are almost always written by a large team of writers whilst British ones tend to be just one or two main writers. Obviously some exceptions, but that's the norm. Also US sitcoms generally have a more "ensemble" feel so there are more characters to build stories around.
or Frasier before Niles and Daphne get together.
On the UK side, Only Fools and Horses (not counting the last few Xmas specials), Fawlty Towers or Spaced.
I love Arrested Development enormously, but I think I'm going to go with Fraiser just because of longevity.
The skill of the writing on both shows is immeasurable and incredibly clever. It all just makes you look at something like My Family and want to throw up down the back of your sofa.
but i find seinfield to be a tad overated. just a tad. don't get me wrong, i think it's a great show, just not the greatest show/sitcom of all time. i'd prefer fawtly towers.
For a bit of a leftfield opinion: Seinfeld. And in George Costanza, we have one of the most fully realised, 3-dimensionally hilarious characters ever put on screen.
It just wins.
I must be a bad person.
I love the majority of things mentioned in these threads. Bar My Family :p
Scrubs, Friends, Peep Show and Father Ted. Also the Office. I've still never seen Seinfeld, and I think Spaced is massively overrated.
as stated above by all the intelligent people who answered this thread ;)
very good, could be tie...
And David Hyde Pierce acts it out brilliantly.
Frasier is just edged out of the top spot for me, but for a funniest single episode - the one where they restage the radio murder mystery kills me every time.
Much cleverer and funnier than its premise gave it any right to be.
Fuck all this "overrated" bollocks - it's just out and out shit. I'm with bam-bam on this one. Friends all the way. I'd like to say Arrested Development, but it's yet to show it can stand the test of time. But it probably will. Frasier is bare jokes, but I've always been put off slightly by its intellectual setting, not because I found it or intimidating or anything but just because it always meant it was never that comfortable a watch. Kind of like one of those nouveau cuisine restaurants - the food might be good, but you're sitting in a BIG FUCKING WHITE ROOM. That's not nice. Porridge is the shit. I loved Reginald Perrin when I was younger, but I can't really remember it now. I'm sure it was great though. Comedies about nervous breakdowns always are. Peep show isn't consistent enough. The Office is too cringey. Extras is too gimmicky.
say about Arrested Development: "it's yet to show it can stand the test of time"????
it went from 2003-2006 and now it's almost 2008 and there wont' be any more made..so....
Thinking Seinfeld is shit and going on to declare you like friends is a lot like those people who think the Beatles are crap but like Oasis.
It's funny, because I actually like Oasis but I don't like The Beatles!
Seinfeld is just a caricature comedy. That's all it is. Every episode, it's the same thing - Jerry's witty, George is neurotic, Kramer's crazy, Elaine doesn't do much of anything at all and I die a little inside.
Frasier, Arrested Development, Seinfeld and the Office in no particular order.
it's a laugh a minute.
WHY HAS NO ONE MENTIONED THIS???
it's utter pish!
better than the films that team have made. fawlty towers, i'm alan partridge, and I know its early days but flight of the conchords is execellent, better than the mighty boosh.
anyone who disagrees is just an idiot.
I love Seinfeld, Larry Sanders, AD et al but I cannot comprehend how people can say they are better than the first series of Alan.
As for Friends and crap British sitcoms from the 70's then I have to just sigh.
and I can't be arsed to make a list.
But on ATP telly they were showing The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin and it reminded me about how good a sitcom it was.
