who appear to have nothing better to do than comment upon the 'state' of Drowned in Sound.
I remember when I was editor here they ran a story claiming that DiS was part-owned by Clear Channel and how it had sold out.
I care slightly less now I no longer work for DiS but I still think it's utterly hilarious how their journalistic talents stretch as far as listing some threads on this board. My feeling is that they've just realised nobody is reading, so they'd better start whipping up some controversy - and quickly!
some of the thread titles sound silly, but most of them still turned into interesting discussions. or were at least amusing rather than just 'things said by thickies' as they seem to be trying to imply.
"Bitter cunts" - because of two stories in around five years that mention Drowned in Sound? I say well done you chaps for having enough profile to merit being of interest to people. You shouldn't be so precious.
I'm closely involved with diskant and it's true that traffic and interest in the site is down on what it's used to be. The internet has changed since the site launched many many years ago, but because diskant is a totally spare-time operation maintained by a couple of people with day jobs it's been hard to keep up. That's why we are planning a relaunch of sorts in the new year.
As for the journalistic talents on show, the writers on diskant are free to post whatever they like on the site. I know that the poster of the 'Genuine messages on DiS' message frequents this board so he can back himself up if he feels it's necessary. I would imagine it was very much tongue in cheek, though.
DiS and DiS users shouldn't fall into the easy position of thinking that because their site is currently riding high in popularity, it represents the pinnacle of journalistic talent and reasoned commentary. That would be a real shame.
Unfounded rumours get published all the time. The comment you quote is nothing to do with that, it's based on Dave Stockwell's opinions about what to draw from the story.
but I do think the list is an amusing read and also shows the sheer inventiveness of DiS members! I do actually like the diskant site although it's not updated very much but they link to some interesting stuff.
they're right, it really is tricky to rap and rhyme all right on time or whatever. especially when you've had four cans of strongbow and a lot of peache schnappes.
Those guys are bitter cunts

and its not even controversial!

Diskant? More like Dick-scant!!!
Whats more is I don't see the problem
with them being silly!
Bit harsh that Crablin

except that person
isn't taking the piss of the journalism, they're taking the piss of the users of the site, and thus trying to imply DiS is for thickies.
and thus insulting the journalism?
thickie.
I don't get it
If DiS is for thickies then it implies the journalism is too,
is what Jon means.
I don't get it
Me either.
Oh, and here is the Clear Channel/DiS story:
http://www.diskant.net/weblog/2005/07/guardian-live-music-and-clear-channel.htm
and a subsequent clear-up/retraction:
http://www.diskant.net/weblog/2005/09/clear-channel-update.htm
Thats a pretty shit retraction
really though, isn't it?
Seems okay to me?
It says unequivocally that a claim made was in fact incorrect.
'The lesson to be drawn from this? I'll let you form your own opinion about that'
I think the lesson is actually don't publish unfounded rumours you heard from a source seemingly not reputable enough to be named.
Anyway, I'm going to go and be inane somewhere
I don't agree
Unfounded rumours get published all the time. The comment you quote is nothing to do with that, it's based on Dave Stockwell's opinions about what to draw from the story.
i dont think anyone sees DIS
as the pinnacle of journalistic talent anymore, my output has gone way down...
they've really got our number
I don't really get it
It's not really saying anything at all.
Maybe people will see the interesting
titles for discussion and join us!!
The first one on the list is mine!
The big brain am winning!
now you have to leave earth for no raisen.
To be trapped forever by bad grammar and plot holes?
I can't remember the exact quote...maybe I'll just wheel out some Zap Brannigan instead
"kif! i have made it with a woman. inform the men!"
"Kif, I'm heading to the men's room
and I'm going to need an attendant...Oh I'm sorry, you're crying, like a woman"
I'm pretty sure I'm responsible for 3 of those!
I stick by all of them...
They didn't even use my more ludicrous ones ("Anyone wanna help me start a musical revolution" for example...)
I don't know what they're getting at exactly
but I do think the list is an amusing read and also shows the sheer inventiveness of DiS members! I do actually like the diskant site although it's not updated very much but they link to some interesting stuff.
where WAS the hip hop thurston?
EXACTLY
EXACTLY
Hanging out with the indie Run DMC
when i played sing star at my friend's birthday party last week
i did Run DMC in the style of Morrissey. is that who you mean?
It's tricky or it's like that?
Either way, you are a contender.
it's tricky
they're right, it really is tricky to rap and rhyme all right on time or whatever. especially when you've had four cans of strongbow and a lot of peache schnappes.
And when I'm lying in my bed
I think about life
And I think about death
And neither one particularly appeals to me
It's tricky! It's tricky tricky tricky!
^this
as wishpig said, they could have used threads from the social board.
Any of the sweary ones pre filter
or twogirlsone..
Heh.
Spot on with J Newsome though!
Awful voice
Her voice
Dislike it.
I have
warned people many times about dull threads.
yes
but then you still continue posting them :-(
zactly
- to be fair, we all do.
I honestly can't see the
problem with any of those thread titles. Some are a bit, well, teenager-sounding, but what's wrong with that?
Having skimmed the blog, all I'm seeing on there is relentless self-promotion for the writers' band and ventures anyway. What's it supposed to be?
What do they want us
to post about? I don't get what their problem is.
They have
possibly
the Planet's
most
bo
ring
review
s
i remember some of those!
seriously though; thurston, wheres the hip-hop?
gah
someone already said dat..
why are you all up in arms?
there's not really anything wrong with most of those thread titles as they do usually promote interesting discussions.
this will fall hardly make any impact and will of been forgotten about in 5 minutes.
Who's up in arms?
I think its funny
i didn't actually
so their plan failed.
Dammit
back to viral marketing school for me :D
