jobs.

hedgehog [Edit] [Delete] 83 replies 16:26, 4 December '07

so, a trial at Pizza Hut and an interview at Starbucks today has led me to start this, the job thread.

what's the worst/best job you've ever done?

and...have you ever had trouble with co-workers etc.

any other job-related wisdom or stories would be nice....go!

  • cleaned toilets in Safeway during uni holidays

and a girl from school who I barely knew but fancied saw me resplendent in lime green dickie bow and waistcoat and rubber gloves and probably thought I worked there for life.

2 days it lasted, funnily enough

  • I think this is the third thread of its ilk

    But hell, I'll go first...

Somerfield- I worked there briefly in the bakery. No need to go into detail, you can imagine what it was like.

A stationery shop- absolutely 100% depressing. Avoid like the plague.

  • congrats!

i see my good luck paid off.

my only job was a paperboy for 2 years.

it was awful, i used to get so wet.

    Dicko | 4 Dec '07, 16:29 | X
    • well, maybe it did!

I'll find out tomorrow from Pizza Hut, but Starbucks pay more so wish me luck for that because that's the job I want!

      • good luck

        will you get a discount?

        Dicko @hedgehog | 4 Dec '07, 16:34 | X
        • probably, I dunno

I got offered free pizza at pizza hut, and declined (had to get to my interview at starbucks!) and was offered some coffee etc at starbucks, but again...I declined, because I'm silly.

          • ...

you turned down a whole meal?

that's silly, i'd have took as much as i could!

            Dicko @hedgehog | 4 Dec '07, 16:36 | X
            • not a whole meal!

just a pizza, which I wouldn't be able to do anything with cos I had my interview, and then I turned down the drink cos...I....had to go back into town...

  • worst: Supermarket, circa 16-21

best: now, content editing and stuff for ladbrokes.com

wasn't until i entered the real world of jobs I realised how bad working in a supermarket is.

        klaire @theetersecrimp | 4 Dec '07, 17:38 | X
  • Hmmm

I've worked at the Co-op every summer since I was 16. It gets progressively worse with each passing year.

Breifly worked in Somerfield on Byres Road, well for about 8 months. It was brilliant crack 'cause everyone else was a student but the work was pretty rubbish. Until I get let loose in the butchery, chopping up lumps of animal carcass is surprisingly entertaining.

Worked as a labourer for 2 summers until I was old enough to get a real job, it was good crack also but the worst job in the history of the world. There is no fun in mixing cement and carrying blocks for 8 hours a day.

Pizza Hut sounds good but working there will well put you off the pizza's I hear.

Make sure wherever you choose to work there are plenty of similarly aged folk, or you will be bored out of your skull!

    blaaast | 4 Dec '07, 16:36 | X
    • well, from my trial at pizza hut today

it wasn't that good! if I was to get a job there, I'd be getting paid about £4.50...and mostly what I did was clean tables...I know as I worked there longer there would be more to do but I wasn't that drawn to it, especially because the floor in the kitchen was all greasy and slippy, eugh.

      hedgehog @blaaast | 4 Dec '07, 16:42 | X
      • Don't they like spray the flavouring onto their pizza's?

Whatever they do it tastes damn good.

You will get tips though, especially when you start serving hungry weejies.

        blaaast @hedgehog | 4 Dec '07, 16:44 | X
        • the tips I saw today was about 55p

and other people just didn't bother leaving a tip at all.

also, do NOT get me started on how precise pizza hut are about how you position the knife and fork on the napkin, silly.

          hedgehog @blaaast | 4 Dec '07, 16:46 | X
    • i worked in somerfields

for the best part of 9 months.
was shit but as said above, everyone else in there was a student so i didn't mind as i knew them all. manager was a cunt though. the only pleasing thing was returning some of my uniform in tescos bags and throwing them into the board room whilst a meeting was being held.

      alxmoore @blaaast | 4 Dec '07, 16:45 | X
    • I work at said somerfield!

Yeah, the work is a complete pisstake and everyone else cant be arsed either. I think i'm going to regret quitting once I get a job that involves actual work, but at least it wont be as boring.

      yes_ @blaaast | 4 Dec '07, 16:50 | X
      • i thought i'd regret it

as it's easy money really but then i found a job that paid better for me to do Less work!? go figure!
so it worked out better for me really.
plus i still get the discount as i know enough of the checkout staff/my girlfriend now works there.

            • That's so weird that you work in my old stomping ground!

              I was on dairy.

I know a few people that still work there, they all go to Rev on a Wednesday I think.

              All the cool folk left.

Do they ever talk about the guy that was in the paper for his Somerfield shenanigans? He was a legend, top bloke too.

              blaaast @yes_ | 4 Dec '07, 18:36 | X
  • All I have to contribute:

I'm quitting at the end of the month, partly for my school work, and partly because it makes me want to die.

Hopefully now i'll be able to get a job in a place that doesent smell of cardboard and smashed Dolmio, though.

  • ...

I got fired from my best job. It was the nicest letting go I think you could have, though, and I'm still on good terms with the business. And I love my replacement. It's a little weird.

Probably the worst was working at a Shop N Save.

    alley | 4 Dec '07, 16:47 | X
    • My best was working as a lifty

at Mount Norquay ski resort, Banff, Canada.

The pay was pretty LOL, but, I got to to snowboard for 2 and half hours per day (whilst still getting paid). I also got a season pass valid at 21 US/Canadian resorts to use on my days off and the lovely French-Canadian girls in the canteen would give us as much food as we liked for free.

The worst was working in the telesales office for the RNLI's christmas catalogue. The humourless twats who worked there all want drowning, sadly, living in Poole they're statistically very likely to be saved by a lifeboat.

      Alex-in-Ciderland @alley | 4 Dec '07, 16:56 | X

          Alex-in-Ciderland @alxmoore | 4 Dec '07, 17:03 | X
      • Just out of interest

how did you get this job?
The Banff one, not the telesales one.

        _antilovesong @Alex-in-Ciderland | 4 Dec '07, 21:16 | X
        • I applied for a working visa

through BUNAC and went out to Canada after graduation with the specific intent of working for a resort.

I was torn between Banff and Whistler, but, chose Banff as it's a better town to live in, although Whistler is the superior resort (that said it's win/win as they're both fantastic).

Then I just turned up and started touting my CV around town, met a friend who knew someone at Mount Norquay, short interview and hired.

It's all quite ad hoc, small mountain towns, everyone knows everyone else so easy to get in.

    • Worst is easy -

it's the job I have right now. Temping in a post room. I open post. I put it in piles, and then other piles, and then other piles. And then I get to log it onto the computer.

It was expressed that I needed a degree to do this job. I hate it.

    • aye I know

Starbucks pays better, and the Pizza Hut I went to seems to be kind of gross...and greasy...

      hedgehog @_vikram | 4 Dec '07, 18:29 | X
      • yeah it did seem good

the manager was really nice and I met the district manager who was lovely too.

also apparently after a year of working at Starbucks you get shares in stock or something so you can end up with lots more money.

        hedgehog @_vikram | 4 Dec '07, 18:41 | X
      • aye I do

it was the one on Hanover Street (just off of Princes Street, near the Mound).

I was expecting Starbucks to ignore my application but I got a call a few hours after I handed it in, you should definitely try again because they pay £5.70 an hour when you start out, no matter how old you are, which is pretty decent.

        hedgehog @Constellation | 4 Dec '07, 20:46 | X
        • ah yes, also this ^

I hope their staff toilets are nicer, the one in pizza hut for ladies had no toilet seat and practically no soap, I should have used the bloody customers toilet!

              • aw thankye, I do too!

I'm going to find out about pizza hut tomorrow at about 12 and then I'm going to starbucks for an hour trial at about 3...I think I may just turn down pizza hut because it wasn't very nice and the pay would be awful....let's just hope starbucks doesn't say no to me!

                hedgehog @_vikram | 4 Dec '07, 20:58 | X
              • it depends on which starbucks you work at

the pay is £5.60 an hour but in certain places across town they add on 10p, 20p, 30p etc to the pay, I applied to the one on Forest Road/top of Middle Meadow Walk, so it's just 10p more there.

and yeah, experience is good! most places I passed who wanted people, needed people with experience which is rather annoying when you're looking for your first job!

                hedgehog @Constellation | 4 Dec '07, 20:52 | X
                • haha, aye that is always a plus!

gah, working the till is one thing I'm dreading, I'm just awful with numbers and the like...anything else is fine!

what sort of things do you do? general sales-assistant type things?

                  hedgehog @Constellation | 4 Dec '07, 21:00 | X
                  • ah

I hate that hanging around and not doing anything, and also being asked questions by people and you can't answer.

it's nice if people can just tell you what to do, then you go do it...rather than having to show initiative and work out what to do yourself, that's just bad!
