The food at Lidl is good.
It's weird how there's this bizarre supermarket class system in the UK.
In Germany Lidl is just a normal store that everyone goes to.
Here you get new money mums in 4x4s who wouldn't dream of going in there in case someone from Acacia Avenue sees them!
they survived the Hitler and Stalin, minimum wage is a walk in the park in comparison.
They're forever publishing little exposes about unethical business practices, but, then they advertise for totally unpaid positions at their offices in order to cash in on the hordes of desperate media graduates who will do anything to find an opening.
Then, they have the audacity to write about how the media is far too middle class....well, if you offer unpaid positions/internships the only people who will apply will be middle class kids whose wealthy parents can subsidise them.
But that doesn't mean Lidl aren't unethical employers, and that doesn't mean I can't choose not to shop there.
It just means that I'm in a position to do so because no matter what happens then within reason my parents will still fund me, ha ha! (I'm a fucking monster me).
rich people like to go and be seen there, "for the novelty of its cheapness darling". Plus their chocolate praline seashells are second to none, better than Guylian any day.
and there were these frozen crabs staring up at me, looking sad :(
I live next to a Lidl, aside from having incredibly rude staff, a lot of stuff from there is decent. Except fruit and veg, fresh stuff. Avoid that stuff like the plague.
so I never regarded Lidl as downmarket.
You're right, the fruit/veg isn't the best, but, in Germany everyone buys that at markets rather than shops anyway.
It's good for BBQ stuff in the summer too.
They know full well that people in areas already serviced by Waitrose, Sainsburys, M&S Simply Food et al aren't going to switch to them.
So, they situate themselves in less prosperous/student areas instead.
Again it's the contrast between Germany and the UK.
In Germany there's less of a breakdown between rich/poor suburbs.
I spent nine years on and off living around Cobham/Oxshott so I can well understand.
this thread has already happened.
Lidl is the greatest. I live very close to one so it is kind of my cornershop.
Well, I'm going to do the washing up then go to ASDA!
Baked dough balls, Pollo ad Astra pizza, tiramisu, 2 or 3 bottles of Peroni and then a double espresso.
At Pizza Express are little balls of heaven.
Is there a Pizza Express in Bury St Edmunds these days?
When I was dating a girl from there I spent more nights than was strictly necessary at Caffe Uno.
I like pan-fried chicken breast as much as the next man, but, there's only so much of it you can eat.
Yes, there is a Pizza Express in Bury. It's a pretty decent one too, nice lighting and stuff.
But Cafe Uno's gone now! A French-food type thing's replaced it.
Chicken Caesar FTW.
and this girl I'm friends with at the moment is totally scared of the sea and all aspects of marine life.
Why are women so scared of the ocean?!
As a child were you subjected to relentless viewings of The Little Mermaid or was there an incident involving you lost in a giant fishmarket?!
Additionally, which bit of the sea did you grow up in the vicinity of?
the fruit and veg is rubbish!!! I once found a big snail in my grapes. Kept it as a pet.
