It's mostly so we know after gigs how we sounded and whether the sound balance was right.
take a minidisk recorder and speak to the sound man. thats a godd idea.
but I don't know the technical details. Do I need to know technical details?

You're coming to Brixton on 22nd December aren't you? If it all works then maybe I could get it from you then...
and the quality you expect to achieve you can do afew things.
1. Best option would be to buy a hard disc recorder and run a few lines out of the sound desk into it + a few mics in the room (left/right/centre from the stage). You'll need to OK it with the sound guy though and it will take a bit of setting up before hand. Quite expensive too.
2. Do as above but with a laptop running something like Pro-Tools. Pretty unreliable though. I'd keep the number of tracks down to a minimum- you could even just record a stereo out from the desk with maybe one room mic.
3- Run the master out from the desk into a Minidisc player.
There are loads of ways of doing it to be fair.
Sounds like the Minidisc option's gonna be most economical so I might try that first and see how I get on...
The George pisses me off...the sound guy turned up so fucking late the other day, and he pissed off during what I saw of your set. I was looking for him to tell him to turn the fucking vocals up.
I never really know how we sound and it changes from venue to venue. And I'm sure my vocals tend to be low in the mix as soundmen tend to put vocals low in the mix...
I've decided the George are just too frustrating to deal with and am putting gigs on elsewhere in the future.
Yeah...makes sense. It's a shame, because it is a pretty cool venue, but their lack of organisational ability makes it needlessly harder work than it should be.
Buy one of these:
A pair of good headphones plugged into the mic socket of a mini-disc will give decent but clearly 'mic in a room' levels of recording.
Or you could get a Behringer 802 £50 mixing desk and plug that into a mini-disc and then plug two Shure PG-81 condensor mics (about £100 each but cheap for what they are) into it and set them up around the room.
Or you could get the sound engineer to take the desk feed into your mini-disc but this is fraught because:
- it could overload it
- unless everything's mic'd up it can be too heavy on certain instruments and in any case, will still likely be too much on the vocals
- you can get zero audience sound and so it's unatmospheric
Personally I would go with a mini-disc and headphones for the cheapest easiest option.
all we really need is enough of a sound to tell us if the vocals are coming through and the instruments all sound about right - we're got gonna use 'em commercially or anything...
but if you're going to use it for telling what you say there then don't bother.
For one thing, vocals sound out of tune that definitely didn't on the night; the sound is attenuated such that you don't get a decent balance of the instruments and generally, it can be very disheartening.
What you'll get is a nice record of a gig and maybe you're only recording of a certain song that you like but they're never quite 'right', I've found.
I've got a little stereo condenser mic that you plug into a Minidisc player. I've never used it as my minidisc player broke- you can have for 2 pints or something?
Let me know when you're gigging and I'll try and bring it along.
Those mics are made for recording meetings and as such are MASSIVELY over sensitive.
Also they pick up the whirring of the minidisc too.
You use headphones because they tend to balance out the loudness of the gig compared to the sensitivity of the microphone.
