Passed the maths exam and got one, anyone else here?
didn't get in though :(
what college are you applying to?
yes i know, it used to be the girls one, and i really regret applying there. I pretty much did it at random. Got a place at UCL though, and still waiting on imperial, so any of those might be ahead of oxford on my place to go list.
Oxford UCL and Imperial were my top 3, and i wasn't sure if i got an offer from oxford if i would take it as i liked the idea of going to london.
i went for imperial over UCl in the end...
i'm off for maths unsurprisingly. whats imperial like? Socially? I've heard there is a HIGH % of men, although obviously its the best academically. I went to imperial and it looked seriously nice. But UCL did too... hard desicions.
imperial maths has probably the worst boy/girl ratio of any course in the country. its about 90-10 as far as i can tell, and about 50%+ asian too, and there is a lot of segregation so you aren't likely to ever really get to know any of them.
that said i'm sure its a great course, but UCl would no doubt be better socially.
i'm not really selling it am i?
but you are giving some good advice i reckon. Cheers!
Yeah the course is amazing, but only just better than UCL, and UCL would prob be more fun... and women.
to do Chemistry got a place then didn't get the grades they turned me down then 2 days later I got a call asking me if I would like to come as they 'found' a place for me - by which time I'd already said yes to Cardiff and then spent 4 wonderful years in Cardiff!
has a university? Actually really?
Wow. What can you read there?
which used to be a girls' college. It was practically all integrated by the time I went there but one year we did end up being about 60% wimmin. But given the recentness of Hildas' change you'll be surrounded by oestrogen! It'll be fantastic!
(Although I only know two 'Hildabeasts' - one works for Wangari Maathai, the Nobel Peace Prize Winner, and musically wouldn't be out of place on here, and the other one is about as Tory as they come and likes Arthurian battle reconstructions.)
most are medics
but i will be here helping applicants to interviews etc etc. good stuff.
At lovely Hertford, which I'd choose again if you put the list in front of me :-)
My only advice is: be prepared for it to be a trade-off between success and social life. Especially for a "real" subject like maths. Being at a place like Hilda's will help, even if it may be a bit weird next year!
about applying for hilda's. the place will have a real buzz next year with the first intake of men.
top tips for interview: be yourself, enjoy your stay in oxford (tis a really nice place). oh and bring a coat, it is fucking freezing at the moment.
I messed mine up fairly badly, it was first thing in the morning and I forgot which date the first world war started. That was for history though, and at a different college.
You can do it!
and just flirt with the interviewer - well bad advice maybe, but 20 years ago at Caius in Cambridge it worked for me - in the end he turned out to be my bf, got me a first as he was one of the examiners (i assume that's why, as i was bit thick compared to the rest), and nice spot in oxford at Brasenose (loveable but pretentious) - seriously though, if you can stand the old-school tie brigade, oxbridge is fabulous.
