that there were people in celtic shirts and several scottish flags in the croatian end ?
Didn't you know us Scottish Celtic fans are a bunch of bastards?
and it pisses me off.
we should have a British team.
Ask anyone on these fair isles what their nationality is, and very few will say 'British'. And of those that do, almost all will be from England.
but i'd support scotland or ireland if they were playing anyone but england.
less reluctant to call themselves British then?
but thats because i tend to associate 'english' with either football hooligan twat or smug tory bastard
on both sides
I had a fucking sight better things to do on Saturday than go cheer on the Italians (ignoring the fact I wanted Scotland to win). They really should take up a new hobby to occupy their time more effectively.
is what being scottish is all about.
it's like being a man.city fan, it doesn't really matter what happens to your team as long as your big neighbour loses it's a good weekend.
You know the one who, when he goes to the reunion, is still convinced this years-old rivalry is somehow applicable to both their lives despite the fact Cusack's never thought about it since he left the school...
but still, the fact remains that hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
in 2007 the anti-english-sport sentiment in scotland has more to do with the attitude of your media, and the attitude of most english football fans, than anything else. the mean-spirited, pompous, "we deserve to be there" attitude, the scrabbling for any possible excuse or non-english scapegoat (bad referees, cristiano ronaldo, etc), and the sense of superiority and entitlement is frankly sickening when compared to the attitudes of the other home countries towards their teams. you're fucking irritating, to be blunt. this is coupled with a general (and, i'd say, fairly accurate) perception that most english people are largely ignorant when it comes to the differences between england and the other home countries.
don't kid yourself into thinking it's all deeply held resentment over william wallace or some shit. that's just a strawman
I mean all you're points about the attitude of the media and football fans are by no means inaccurate. They're all things I've heard before and they're all reasonable points.
But they aren't the reason you dislike England either.
The reason you dislike England is 'cos it's part of your culture and something that has been for years in much the same way as, say, Everton fans hate Liverpool fans and the French make disparaging remark about the Belgians.
To justify it with any reason of any kind is simply a jusfication and nothing more - effectively it's a cultural mindset and not something rooted in logic or reason.
like England - Germany and/or France
there is an inherent prejudice, i wont deny that. but it wouldnt be anywhere near as strong were it not for the media (and to a lesser extent, the fans, who are largely represented on a wider scale by the media anyway). the nationwide british media that scotland (and the other home countries) get is basically english media. you have no idea how annoying this is.
look at rugby: the scotland england rivalry (while still very strong, especially when the two play each other) is nowhere near as vociferous as with football, because the english media coverage of rugby is far less appalling than that of football. sure, there's a scotland england rivalry, but it's fairly playful and not a big deal
the ten oclock news tonight - first story about the tax thing, second story about england going out, no mention of northern ireland until we get to the sport. I think all we're looking for is a bit of evenhandedness.
would just have been Croats attempting to wind up the English.
Balkan football crowds are great at that sort of thing.
I was somewhat surprised to see so many UVF and UFF banners together with the Red Hand of Ulster present in Zagreb in the run-up to a match. Upon asking what was going on, it was explained to me that Serb fans(overwhelmingly orthodox christian)have embraced ulster loyalism due to the fact that they have a shared love of killing catholics.
What is the predominant faith in Croatia?
