replying in a thread is normally going to be a vote for it. It makes sense, and you can always untick the box.
and we all know its dumb.
Voting for a thread means its good enough to put the effort in for voting for it.
Not voting takes more effort now. So why not vote? The whole concept of voting has now become meaningless.
even if they thought the thread was good.
but making it automatic might help to make the voting system more useful...
It's a decent measure of popularity too, how many people have posted in a thread rather than how many posts.
Again, you can always untick it but as I can't be bothered, this thread gets my vote.
some sort of double-vote?
so you either go to the effort of pressing the vote button, or you go to the effort of replying, either way it counts as a vote.
If you want to reply without supporting the thread you can untick the box.
half the threads I reply to, I wouldn't vote for and I usually always forget to tick the box, it'd be better unticked by default.
all part of the lovey-dovey culture that infests this land: Everybody is everybody's friend unless they choose not to be; not being friendly is seen as the act rather than being friendly. Acting is, thus, casting oneself as a bad person. Such an attitude devalues real friendship.
I can't see the problem to be honest.
where everybody is showing their enthusiasm for all the various content. And so to a casual passer by/surface judging advertising exec it makes DiS seem like something worth investigating. Because their users really CARE about DiS (instead of just not being arsed to untick the box)
would it not make sense to just replace the vote system and replace it with "Most replied" in the left and right-hand columns?
because what if you like the article/thread/review but had nothing to add to it?
you can only vote once but can reply lots of times
beat me to it.
but votes are gay. And not many people vote without posting, unless it's a joke thread. And it could be set up so each replier's only counted once. Like at is atm basically, but without a box to check/uncheck. And that's blates what Sean and co really want anyway.
you can also vote without posting.
and it's only one vote for each person who posted; not each post.
Sometimes you'll get a thread where someone has literally made 50 posts themselves, yeah there are loads of replies but that's a slightly misleading statistic. The votes work better there.
