cycling and the quest to get off my ass

sharp_yet_blunt [Edit] [Delete] 29 replies 21:48, 7 November '07

how good would cycling be as a way to keep fit and lose weight? I was thinking about going running everyday but then i realised cycling would be way more fun. Anyone have any thoughts?

  • Make sure you buy a bike.

    • and a helmet.

and make sure you know how to fix a puncture.

    • i dont actually have one

good point. I think my sister does though, and i'll just go cycling at night so no one sees me

    • walkings even more

      boring though.

    • I don't believe that.

Walking is good though. But its more about appreciating the scenery than serious exercise.

    • You would get fit...

      but you won't lose weight.

      • thought as much

it might get me motivated to do other stuff to lose weight though, like a stepping stone to greater things

    • Running

      is way more fun.

      • running

is easily the most painful way to lose weight.

        • Other than

having your limbs chopped off with a spoon.

        • How is running painful?

I run regularly, and don't get this statement.

          • not at all bad for knees

if you have decent trainers, or run more interesting places than on roads.

          • it's a punishing form of exercise

as compared to cycling or swimming or going to the gym, and you won't actually lose much weight doing it.

            Parsefone @buzzard55 | 7 Nov '07, 21:57 | X
            • You'd burn more calories

with 40 mins of running, than 40mins of cycling or swimming.

              buzzard55 @Parsefone | 7 Nov '07, 22:00 | X
              • you can run 40 minutes?

                continuously?

I can swim or bike more or less indefinitely.

                Parsefone @buzzard55 | 7 Nov '07, 22:01 | X
                • Yeah I did it the other day

for me I can fit in a run after work for 30-40 mins and still relax in the evening and eat etc. I think with time contraints in mind its a more efficient way, if you like, to get some exercise.

Of course with more free time, say on the weekend, I might go for a long distance bike ride, but time doesn't always allow.

                  buzzard55 @Parsefone | 7 Nov '07, 22:09 | X
                  • you have my respect sir.

I could probably manage a 40 minute run, but the thought of doing it every day makes me cringe like the big girl I am.

                    Parsefone @buzzard55 | 7 Nov '07, 22:20 | X
                    • start off small

and build up to it, you'll be hooked soon enough and will loathe rest days

                      Brooner @Parsefone | 7 Nov '07, 22:21 | X
                    • I don't do it every day

particularly now I've got friggin Man Flu. I like to mix the combination of running and weight training during the week. But thats just my preference.

I am enjoying running a lot though. Its surprisingly easy, and very relaxing.

                      buzzard55 @Parsefone | 7 Nov '07, 22:27 | X
            • so...

              eat healthy(whats healthy?) + cycle 3 times a week = superfit

              sharp_yet_blunt @JustHannah | 7 Nov '07, 22:19 | X
              • depends how long you cycle for

                :)

                Brooner @sharp_yet_blunt | 7 Nov '07, 22:20 | X
                • i dunno

i'll see how far i can manage without collapsing

                  sharp_yet_blunt @Brooner | 7 Nov '07, 22:23 | X
                • Cycling's Ace

I think people should cycle more. Not only is it good for you and the enviroment, its is also fun and can be faster than useing a car sometimes
