so, post-Release the Bats thread?

nice_squirrel [Edit] [Delete] 63 replies 12:43, 3 November '07

I've washed pretty much all the fake blood off now. I had a great time! Although by the end I'd kind of lost track of the bands.

Fuck Buttons - awesome! And they looked thrilled.
Deerhunter - I'd like to hear some recorded. They had good songs, but weren't totally thrilling live. The man had weird pointy shoulders.
Black Lips - Tuneful. Played covers. Played a song I knew.
Liars - ace! I think. I need to listen to lots of Liars.
Deerhoof - I wasn't paying too much attention. Squeaky. Not bad though.

It was an ace night though, good to see lots of people and meet new people. And I was pretty pleased with how my costume turned out (see profile picture). I hope I win!

i had loads of fun. liars absolutely slayed, even if they didn't play Broken Witch.

note to ATP: please organise more fun events 10 minutes from my home. thnx.

  • i thought it was brilliant

fuck buttons/liars were the best. it was pretty amazing to see fb up there and they seemed to please the [larger than expected] crowd. i can't wait to see liars again next month.

deerhunter were mostly boring/average, but had some exciting moments. black lips were good fun, and deerhoof sounded awesome, but had to leave after 30mins of their set.

    all in all - :D

    • Heroes:

      1. Buttons - really good, despite the problems with Ben's mic/tape thingy.
      2. Liars - TERRIFYING.
      3. Black Lips - Really REALLY good fun, not really paid much attention to them before.
      4. The security guy who let me downstairs despite it being 'sold out'.

      Villains:
      1. Deerhunter - I've never known a band to leave me so cold.
      2. The amount of wankers throwing cans and stuff onstage (a very small minority in a generally good crowd)

  • i still haven't got rid of my face paint

it won't come out fully and I need to go to a sensible thing this evening. Oh dear.
It was a good night although I found having long hair quite disorientating and my face hurt like hell.

As for bands, I missed Fuck Buttons and most of Deerhunter. The queues outside/organisation in that respect were absolutely appalling and unfortunately reminiscent of the first ATP at Minehead. What I saw of Deerhunter was rather great.

Black Lips were OK but sound like Rancid crossed with the Bay City Rollers. They also have moustaches. The drummer was ace though.

Liars were good although I think I haven't listened to them enough.

Deerhoof were great as always. The vocals sometimes annoy me and I wonder how great they would be with better vocals or instrumental as the music is incredible. Another amazing drummer.

Now to continue the facial scrubbing and get rid of these panda eyes.

    doctornovocalcords | 3 Nov '07, 15:18 | X
    • yeah

i missed most of fuckbuttons for the exact same reason. i think it was a folly to have used wegottickets. while i think they're a great little company and fully support the way they work, it simply isn't practical for an event of that size.

      guntrip @doctornovocalcords | 3 Nov '07, 15:22 | X
      • yeah, truth

I had a real ticket, and I just walked straight in, the people I was with took another 10 minutes. Which seemed silly.

        nice_squirrel @guntrip | 3 Nov '07, 15:23 | X
        • ATP wouldn't

exist a we know it without wegottickets, from what I've heard. So, despite some problems getting in...I'm grateful overall.

          atom_jack @nice_squirrel | 3 Nov '07, 15:26 | X
      • yeah it became like speedy tickets on Easyjet

pay a few quid extra in rip-off surcharges and get a proper ticket which gets you in straight-away.

As they knew how many pick-ups there were they could have put a couple of extra desks in the foyer and sorted it out that way, surely?

I was talking to a security man and they said they had way more pick-ups than normal. I wonder if it was because most gigs there aren't wegottickets ones or the ATP crowd are just more aware of its existence/cheapskates and prefer to book that way. Not a very interesting thing to ponder in retrospect.

        doctornovocalcords @guntrip | 3 Nov '07, 15:28 | X
        • We Got Tickets

              • it really was a fantastic night.

Liars were jsut incredible, in a very shambolic way.
the stuff off of Drums not dead is just unbelievable live.
                excellent.

and the security lady let me downstairs because i wanted a t-shirt, and then let me stay, which was nice.

                so much fun.

                • you suck

Deerhoof were 20 times better than every other band. DAMN THEY WERE SO GOOD.

it was grrrrreat. and we managed to get into see fuck buttons and only got there about 15 minutes beforehand...but it seemed like tons of people all turned up at about 8 or 8:30 and thats why the queue was so huge and they missed fb and deerhunter? badness.

Fuck Buttons were grrrreat, tons better than at truck (only other time i've seen them).

                  Deerhunter were rubbish.

Black Lips were hellafun and crowd down the front were good naturedly violent.

Liars were great but needed more loud guitar.

                  Deerhoof were the shizzle.

                  Dissers were lovely.

Richard got up at sophies to use a toilet in the middle of the night. he left his banana costume on the sofa he had been sleeping on, and when he got back he thought the banana costume was someone else who had decided to get onto the sofa, so he decided to sleep on the floor. this morning he was surprisingly sober.

                • it was fun

though i wasn't feeling much fun, having been ill for a couple of days and not really loving the need to shout at people to attempt conversations.

                  Good things:
Costumes of Sophie and Gaz (and Rich & Biggie, but only because they're safer to be allowed out when padded).

Fuck Buttons set being long enough to last from when we started queuing to get in until about 10 minutes after we got in.

                  Liars being excellent as ever.

                  meh things:
deerhoof - her vocals grate after a while.

deerhunter - i did enjoy but got bored towards the end.

                  bad things:
                  queues = rubbish.

                  me bing lame = rubbish.

Deerhoof were soooooooooooooooo good. Anyone who says otherwise probably wasn't listening or is being deliberately perverse. Liars: also good. Black Lips: ok. Other bands: Capita + National Express are evil and wouldn't let me get there in time.

                • aye 'twas fun

execept Deerhoof who are good in theory but the vocals spoil it for everyone...very disappointing.

Liars were ace but the best bit was the 8 minutes of Fuck Buttons I managed to catch after queueing for a million years.

Sophie your costume was amazing, and I am interested to learn that it was Gaz with the face paints and long hair - I never realised!

                • Although I enjoyed it,

it wasn't one of my favourite gigs by a long way.
Deerhoof were very good but played more songs off older albums than I was expecting. They still put on a good show though.

Liars were better at Field Day.

Black Lips - nice surprise, good fun.

Deerhunter - didn't pay much attention.

Fuck Buttons - first time I've seen them and I really enjoyed the music but I didn't really like their stage presence. It didn't stop me enjoying them but my mate was so put off by their histrionics that he couldn't appreciate them at all.

Wegottickets - used them for the first time after all the hype about them on DiS. Doubt I'll use them again.

                  buzzard55 | 4 Nov '07, 18:05 | X
                  • Why wouldn't you use

                    Placid_Casual @buzzard55 | 4 Nov '07, 18:30 | X
                    • A couple of reasons really:

I was disappointed that I didn't get a physical ticket on the door. I normally collect them but on entry was given a really cheap bit of paper that I either gave to the bouncer or threw away it was that worthless. I didn't know this was what wegottickets did, although I could have found this out before I bought I guess. Also, we had to queue for a while on entry which seemed to be a very slow process. We were quite lucky though as we noticed the queue was huge later on when we went for a smoke. Normally I stroll straight in with a ticket.

                      buzzard55 @Placid_Casual | 4 Nov '07, 20:28 | X
                      • I still don't understand why people

care whether they have a physical ticket or not. You still get to see the gig.

Can't deny they fucked up with the queueing though.

                        doctornovocalcords @buzzard55 | 5 Nov '07, 11:35 | X
                • I thought it was ok

Rather than anything amazing. I had fun getting drunk and seeing friends, but the music left me kinda cold. Fuck Buttons were pleasant without doing anything that interesting and I got bored after a while. Deerhunter were poor. I've seen Black Lips 3 times this year and friday was easily the worst. It was a lot of fun dancing down the front but they seemed strangely subdued. Liars and Deerhoof were alright, but I realised I don't really like either of them that much any more.

Fake blood is really hard to wash off.

the terrible sound, for Deerhunter and Fuck Buttons anyway. It did however improve greatly for Liars / Deerhoof. Shame though as ATP events have always prided themselves on having a spot on sound in the past. I love Cryptograms but could barely recognise a single track from it Friday night. Shame.

                    • Roar

I had a good night in all, nice to meet more of yas, and see those that I had met previously once again.
Hmm, missed Fuck Buttons and most of Deerhunter, but was quite glad that my tickets had arrived in the post, as it meant avoiding those giant queues, which had initially scared me.
Black Lips- spent most of the set at the bar I think..
Liars- Not as good as I'd seen them before, I was a bit disappointed. The sound was a bit naff, the guitars were just mushy..
Deerhoof- How small is the singer?! I liked the guitarist's fake arms.

Spent far too much on drink, but didn't feel too worse for wear. Red Bull n Vodka (gaaaah) was a move that would later come back to haunt me.
Felt a bit lame for not dressing up, thanks to jasmine for the impromptu undead eyes look.. still had comments about having red eyes 12hrs later when the makeup was long gone. Dunno if that was booze/tiredness/zombification.
Fell asleep on the train on the way home on sat. Good times.
