I was out at dinner last night with a photographer who lived six blocks away from the World Trade Centres. He was there when he saw them fall and was covered from head to toe in the carcenogenic (sp?) dust which he said enveloped every pore including his throat and stomach. He also went back and took pictures and there is footage of him on youtube running as the second tower collapsed. He said that he thought that truly was the end of the world. He has photographed in a number of war torn scenarios - he's photographed pretty much everything but he said he honestly thought that was what the end of the world would look like.
Do you ever imagine what the end of the world would look like? A very dark subject, am aware, but do you imagine it to be over in seconds (ie some mad fucking mentalist managed to push the button)? Or do you think it will be a long, drawn out and painful scenario which would happen over perhaps a decade or longer?
I always imagine it to be over in seconds. I was even thinking this in the lift at work yesterday. It will be an ordinary and mundane working day and suddenly, within seconds, the entire planet will just disappear. Perhaps that's wishful thinking.
Sorry for the dark subject matter but it's something that has been on my mind for quite a while; we live in very interesting times.
