made me smile...
was it more terrible?
the IRA campaign? i mean, ACTUAL REAL ongoing threat for bombs etc that would / could go off anywhere, anytime. GRANTED they did always phone in warnings...
I was working in London in Shaftesbury Avenue at the time and even when one of my local pubs was blown up, killing a few people, I didn't feel that personally threatened.
It was slightly disconcerting about five years later when workmen doing a refurb at another pub in Cambridge Circus found an IRA bomb that hadn't gone off down the back of a sofa.
Fuck it, everyone's acting so afraid of Bin Laden's terrorist threats but I was far more fucking scared in the 80s when you had a fucknut like Regan with his finger poised over the button and some half-dead old fucker similarly poised in Russia.
That cold war 'end of the world' shit was FUCKING SCARY. A few blokes with backpacks and a funny line in Qu'ran interpretation isn't really in the same league.
Where's Dave, Leeds when you need him?
and those cunts in the RIRA/CIRA either didn't or only did so in order usher people towards the site of the blast (Omagh)
