Donating Organs

DanielKelly [Edit] [Delete] 27 replies 13:40, 2 October '07

Just saw a Yahoo poll that showed that 61% of those who had replied believed that organs should be taken for donationafter death UNLESS the recently deceased had expressed wishes otherwise. I can't really put my finger on why, but this makes me slightly uncomfortable, as I've always felt it is the sort of thing that should only be done with express permission from the person or failing that, next of kin.

Am curious to hear if anyone else here has an opinion on the matter

  • yhey can take whatever they want when I'm dead

    except my eyes

  • it should be an opt out scheme.

Like a tv licence, but with more threatening letters.

    harru | 2 Oct '07, 13:43 | X
  • It should definitely remain an opt-out process

let's face it, a lot of people wouldn't care or would like to donate organs, but would be too lazy to get round to registering, whereas if you have a problem with it you'd have more motivation to take yourself off the list. This way more people benefit.

    • it's an opt-in scheme at the moment.

      harru @laelfy | 2 Oct '07, 13:45 | X
      • oh yeah thats right

but they want to make it opt-out though, don't they?

        laelfy @harru | 2 Oct '07, 13:55 | X
  • If I found out that any of my relations

or close friends had had their organs taken because they didn't express wishes not to, I wouldn't be bothered.

It's quite disgusting that people don't want to, when they can be used to save other lives.

    commandercool | 2 Oct '07, 13:45 | X
    • No it's not.

Your body is pretty much the only thing which a person can claim to totally own.

It's utterly wrong that people can demand access to it after you die.

      Consent is fine

      Opting out is also fine.

      • Can you give me a rationali reason though

why anyone would want to keep their organs after death?

        commandercool @fullerov | 2 Oct '07, 16:46 | X
      • Because perhaps for personal reasons

they don't want people to take them.

I think people should have their wishes carried out with regardsto their own body.

It seems completely wrong to do it if a person has expressly asked not for it to be done.

        fullerov @hollywood_freak | 2 Oct '07, 16:57 | X
        • I just don't agree.

I think a persons body should be totally under their control. Even after Death.

          fullerov @hollywood_freak | 2 Oct '07, 17:05 | X
          • I will.

I'll also tell them they walk funny.

            fullerov @hollywood_freak | 2 Oct '07, 17:14 | X
          • Rationality:

the faculty that is one of the primary distinguishing atrributes between humans and animals.

You wouldn't think twice of taking an animals organs after death, for food or any other reason.

If a person isn't acting rationally in this manner then can they really expect to be treated in a way different from animals?

            commandercool @fullerov | 2 Oct '07, 17:30 | X
          • that's harsh.

wait for a loved one to die before pillaging their body for organs. then leaving the mess for the family to take home in a box.

            Dicko | 2 Oct '07, 13:45 | X
            • that is exactly what they do.

          • I read this as 'Donating Orgasms'

            I must be ill.

          • It's interesting.

It defines the continuation of the species as more valuable than individual's wishes.

            John_Brainlove | 2 Oct '07, 16:47 | X
            • It is in law.

              John_Brainlove @hollywood_freak | 2 Oct '07, 17:14 | X
            • I think it should be opt-out

If it's voluntary then it has to rely on PR campaigns to drum up interest, and you'll end up with fewer donors.

It's not like you need your liver after you're dead, so why not help someone else live instead? I'm all for it.

              colonol_k | 2 Oct '07, 16:50 | X
              • I wouldn't wish my liver on anyone.

                John_Brainlove @colonol_k | 2 Oct '07, 16:55 | X
                • :D

                  doubtful @John_Brainlove | 2 Oct '07, 20:03 | X
            • I'm very much in favour.

As long as it is well-publicised that this is the law so people have the option of opting-out if they do feel strongly.
