£33.99 for a brand new repress of 'closer' by joy division on 12"? wtf?
are these printed on solid gold or something?
I got a vinyl copy of this in Replay in Bristol in 1990. Its gone all dirty creamy /browny on the cover. Nice thick vinyl
If it's the same one as this http://www.normanrecords.com/records/93527
then Virgin are tampering with the prices big time.
Awesome. I want to buy that now. Bad Theo...
I don't want to see that movie. For the same reason.
from the age 15 onwards, and growing up in Somerset pre-internet made me think I was in a party of one but now for some reason I keep thinking about Editors and Edith Bowman for some reason.
Well you have to move on don't you? Film looks good but its for people who read the Guide end to end and put little red asteriks against anything cool.
3 times now.
with closer, pleasures and still inside?
that 'still' boxset was like £24.99 or something. definitely a new 'closer' repress.
i also saw a re-release of that slayer record that came out about four months ago for £20.
thats about 160 quid odd... Wha? Don' ask...
there's overpriced and there's that. i expect places like virgin and hmv to be mildly overpriced but near-enough £35 for a 12" with no fancy packaging is pretty much insane.
I believe it was 44 quid for a vinyl copy of physical graffiti. Ahem
Plus I played pool with Miquita Oliver off of Popworld.
why would anyone pay thirty four quid for a reissue of an album any self respecting market record stall would have an original of for £2?
and remastered so it might sound better. Admittedly it probably sounds worse but there you go.
I got She's Lost Control for about £5 ages ago in my Joy Division phase, which was from about 17-20.. I think I can play about 90% of JD songs on bass for some reason.
I picked up the Heart & Soul boxset for about £15 in my local record shop a few years back though- bargainous maximus. The live cd is ace.
I was in there this afternoon anf they had it for 15 quid.
I got an original copy of this for 99 English Pence because the guy in the second hand record shop thought it was a 12inch single. You look at the cover and if you didn't know, you'd think the same. If you had no clue.
It plays; LOVELY.
the date on the label is 9/5/80......does this mean its worth anything? not that id sell it
90% of Joy Division fans wouldn't give a giggling fuck about them had the singer not committed suicide.
there may be some like that but from personal experiance that was not the case
"The life of a genius tragically cut short!"
..and suddenly everyone's a fan!
because Nirvana were fucking IMMENSE back when Cobain was still alive.
Jeff Buckley was always fucking rubbish, though, so I'll give you that one.
just the size of their fanbase pre and post death!
OK maybe some of that might be 'an inferior reason' as you are suggesting.
But part of it might be because the attention just got more people to listen to the music and THEN like them......theres no real shame in that, i mean if people didnt like them b ut then because he killed hilself then they liked the band because it fitted their morose outlook then that is unlikely, since the music and lyrics seemed rather morosse and brooding anyway......perhaps a few sloaney types might be on the look out for tortured artists and 'misunderstood genuei' to pose with in which case ill go alontg with your criticism, but im not sure if its totally merited.
i wasnt alive when he committed suicide and therefore inevitable me listening to them would contribute to their post death fanbase.
were really really massive and popular before he killed himself.
you might be right about joy division tho.
but they were still bigger after Kurt's death! You still see kids in Nirvana hoodies, that wouldn't happen if they'd just split up or churned out a few more albums.
Another example: Tupac and Biggie.
they are just grunger type kids, thats the music they listen to, as a result they wear the hoody. i have a clash t shirt, i dont wear it because joe strummer died.
which is nice, but i'd prefer UP
as well as 2 JD peel session
I think I have stuff on cassette of this (recorded from radio)
on Strange Fruit or something
whatever that label is that just does Peel sessions in generic covers
(bsnd names on the front) Ive only got a few of those, I dont often see them.
he would intersperse the session songs sometimes......thus I would be waiting with my finger ready on the pause button, hoping that he didnt make one of his 'mistakes' thus making me record some albanian nose flute reggae, and then trying to wipe and reposition the tape perfectly for the next track.
