Am I the only one who thinks this film is utter bobbins?
People flying around on bits of string = rubbish.
do you think lotr is really unrealistic? or star wars?
I just think it's a bit lame and not really as breath-taking as everyone makes out.
better in the cinema than it does on tv.
also, i suppose it was acclaimed for being the first of that kind of film that really made it in hollywood terms. things like that which are mainly lauded because theyre "different" dont usually look that good retrospectively, or at least they dont usually justify the hype they got.
sub-matrix levels of cheesy nonsensical-ness in places.
it's boring the fuck out of me now
I'm watching Transporter 2. Now THAT's unrealistic!
is on after!!!!!11111!!oneoneone
with an american accent, is ridiculous.
Tis that film that is in fact bobbins. The start was good though. All of these films are really beautifully shot, but I can't enjoy em as much as most martial arts movies.
Check out Iron Monkey, that's a good film with the same choreographer.
twas okay too.
It was a welcome change from seeing two people fight over a kebab at a taxi stand on a saturday night.
but it's just a version for occidental people of a genre of movies which was big in the 70/80s.
it tugged one of my heart strings faintly.
but you have to be in the right frame of mind to watch it. I thought it was a crock of prententious shit the first time I saw it. Second time I totally backtracked because it is visually stunning, and, I dunno - it's just really refreshing.
I think the love story (in the wilderness) elements are the most successful.
I much preferred hero (or even twin dragons)
I was watching Hellboy instead.
I'm ready to accept anything in the realm of fantasy, as long as it is within a reasonable context.
But it wasn't just the flying which made me laugh, the story was incredibly boring. I'm sure it jumped between about 20 people in the space of a few minutes.
I had a row with a friend once about the cast flying through the air. He saidit was meant to be metaphorical. I said it was metabollox.
That Hollywood/SE Asian cinema crossover thing, I mean.
Hero is, to my mind at least, a much better film. I think CTHD really loses its way in the middle bit with the romance. On the other hand, if you're just up for the sumptiousness then it's great for visuals.
I seem to remember the commentary makes note of it containing aspects that don't make sense to Chinese audiences but are expected for Western audiences and vice versa so it's presumably a bit of a culture clash in that sense.
Overall it's a movie I'd put in a category with stuff like 2001 or the English Patient or Lawrence of Arabia: a film you really have to be in the mood to watch, not be remotely restless and not have advert breaks.
they're all confection, eye candy and nothing more which if thats what you want from film, they're fine.
