is Salingers other stuff any good?
or recommend me something or something.
Whats Kafka like. I've heard mixed views
Adopt my philosophy of judging every book by its readership and ask yourself exactly what you got out of a book that has bought so much joy to millions of 15 year old emofags...
and picked up some Kafka from the library. Freaky. Or something...
I've had two Kafka's lying on my bedroom floor for about 2 months.
Something always seems more interesting...
they found kafka boring too
pretty much an entirely pointless book.
but as an escape it was really good.
doesn't exactly exist. much.
but i've never read it.
And Kafka is awesome. You should read all his work in this order:
The Metamorphosis/The Judgement/At The Penal Colony
all his other short fiction
the trial has definitely interested me so ill start with that, see what i think.
did he actually finish any novels? a lot were completed by other people from transcripts werent they?
"The Metamorphosis & Other Stories" was published during his lifetime.
Everything else was unfinished. He left instructions for it all to be burnt when he died, but his mate saved as much as he could, though Kafka's lover did burn lots of manuscripts. So like all three of his novels have like funny gaps in the narratives and things, but The Trial in particular feels strangely complete, despite some really important plot points being missing. It's really weird.
but franny and zooey I like.
but it's good.
i can never be arsed with long books so thats pretty much perfect for me :/
Raise High The Roof Beam, Carpenter and the other story in that book were really good too. Though they're pretty meandering - I can't remember much about them other than that I really liked the writing.
This morning I woke up and I was a bug.
But then I realised it was only my soul that was a bug.
Then an all powerful court had me sentenced to life.
Subsequently I died.
i think he was probably trying to say lots of things. And personally I find him really disturbing and really funny. I also like the way he writes stories which work on an ideas/philosophy sort of level and can be quite symbolic or even allegorical, but simultaneously can be totally engaging as just totally surreal stories.
sounds like a total vague cop-out. i just can't be arsed to type out what the things are.
but not at all difficult to read. I've found everything i've read by Kafka to be very easy to read quickly, and not at all an effort. I <3 Kafka.
i just went looking for it and can't remember who i lent it to!
i'm not at home just now, i'll check and send it to you when i am :)
and really good
you should go get it and see if you like it. I didn't find it hard to read but I didn't find it particularly exciting.
Franny and Zooey and For Esme With Love & Squalor are both worth reading.
