which would you say were the best?
For all his friends, he always seems to be alone
But they love him... Bugsy Malone
does that count?
is easily my favourite
I want to know if it's good.
Gangsters means more than Mafia riiight?
I'm sure infernal affairs is good too :S
Any British ones? Sure there's loads?
is the aceness.
I'm trying to think of any other good HK gangster type films- A Bittersweet Life's not bad.
Sonatine is excellent, that's japanese.
in HMV or somewhere- I'm sure I saw it in a sale recently..
i can lend it to you
Goodfellas is streets ahead of most others I've seen.
The Godfathers are worth watching for the sake of completeness. I found them a bit slow.
Mean Streets is alright, if only to see where Keitel/De Niro were in the early 70s. Can see some early Scorsese trademarks.
Casino is very good, just don't watch it straight after Goodfellas.
The Untouchables is very good. As is Carlito's Way.
I need to watch Once Upon A Time In America again. It was hard work.
Road to Perdition is ok.
And I think that's everything.
But while you mentioned it,
Donnie Brasco - very good.
Scarface - a tad overrated. Can't take too much of that Pacino.
Reservoir Dogs/Get Carter get a blanket 'pretty good'. No more.
City of God - Tru say. It's ace, unstoppable pace, totally engaging.
so it's just a film with violence in it then.
I haven't. I know they're more street gangs but I class possession of weaponry, in a group situation used to control and strike fear in others as well as dodgy dealings in other areas as GANGSTA!
Goodfellas is one of my favourite films of all time as well as Leon and Resevoir Dogs.
I mean, the classics are basically uncontested.
However, there's a certain one that has a certain something that makes it, you know, awesome:
Donnie Brasco is BOLLOCKS
Get Shorty - if that had gangsters in it, it was crap.
City of God
Once Upon a Time in America
I just didn't really enjoy the Godfathers.
Anything he made. 'Le Cercle Rouge' probably being my favourite.
Plus early Hollywood gangster films like 'Scarface', or Japanese yakuza like 'Branded to Kill'.
definately is one of the best gangster films of all time.
with Denise Van Outen, Jude Law, Johnny Lee Miller et al?
It sucked the big one.
Except for the very end, which was actually pretty good / scary / gritty.
The Public Enemy
Angels with dirty faces
The Big Heat (on tonight! BBC2! Watch it!)
The Big Combo
Bonnie and Clyde
Then some HK ones:
A Better Tomorrow
City on Fire
ultra violence, pretty girls, weird comedy/seriousness juxtaposition, really good music, social commentary, general aura of cool.
