Paul Verhoeven - set in he second world war Holland and covers the Dutch resistance efforts alongside alot of dodgy dealing and a jewish singer masquerading as a spy.
is good, and generally avaialble on the internet.
Also watched Malle's classic Au Revoir Les Enfants about a bunch of kids at a monk run school around the time of the German occupation of France. The school has a big secret that mustn't come out at all costs.
