a friend is weighing up this decision.
which would you go for and give 1 reason why... go!
are they like a harddrive, so you can just drag and drop files, rather than have to go through itunes, etc?
thats good. my iRiver is dying a slow death, and i was looking to replace it, but everything seems to be either
b) not big enough
c) an iPod, so i would have to use fucking iTunes
how big do these Creatives get?
is that mega-expensive though?
i was thinking more like 20 would be good...
Waow. I paid £10 less then that for my 20GB model.
120 quid more???
madness i tell you!
that 60gb one looks pretty sweet though...
I am seriously tempted to buy one NOW.
I'm going on holiday next week, and not only does my current mp3 player only hold 5gb, i have listened to whats on it A LOT recently, and it is a chore to replace things on it, but the battery life has dropped to about 5 hours (tops), which won't be much use if i'm travelling for 9 hours (each way)
I wish I had £160.
get a european what?
and how would i get a european one? what is firmware? who am i?
one, for about 20 months now, and it's still amazing. Battery life still ain't bad either!
It's almost full though, so I'm gonna get the 60GB video one, fairly soon.
they were supposed to be by far the best back in the day (with a price to match) but maybe other things have caught up now
they haven't brought any new hard-drive ones out since i got my 6gb one about 18 months ago.
but it has been pretty good generally. although i don't have anything to compare it with...
for a few years now and love it.
it's probably a little behind the times now, but is great. a little bulkier than most things these days, but i don't really mind.
I have no idea why no one makes anything like it any more.
The ml_ipod plugin for WinAmp works fine and even allows you to take songs off if you want.
but WinAmp? really i haven't used that since i was about 12.
Are there similar plugins for WMP?
But y'know, I'm still scraping my jaw off the floor from your assumption that WMP is better than WinAmp...in fact the mere suggestion that WinAmp isn't the best software MP3 player available or only second to iTunes (depending on your preferences).
Jesus man. WMP?
I though WinAmp was all about getting skins and stuff. Maybe it has changed a lot since I last used it (about 8 years ago) but it was shit then.
Anyway WMP is what I am used to using, and I like it just fine thankyouverymuch
winamp is about having a nice, tiny little player without loads of pointless add ons. i use it and i love it.
but for now i'm using WMP, and I Like It. OK? Good.
Do you think the Creative works with WMP? That might be the clincher...
it comes with some software to port stuff over that i use, but it also works on a file heirachy system with drag and drop. it also keeps asking if i want to 'synchronise' it but i don't understand what that means and always click 'no'.
which suggests that i'm turning into my mother.

and put stuff on?
My main gripe with the iRiver is it is a bit of a hassle, as to take stuff off (as far as i can tell) you have to go in through explorer and delete the files, but to put stuff on you synch it with WMP. confusing.
and delete stuff. but then i don't find it difficult as i put each album in it's own folder..
the file using the zen menu so it doesnt need to be connected to the pc
(does that make sense?)
you mean i could be walking along the street, decide 'i don't like this song' and then just delete it so my ears never have to endure it again?
and the sound is better,
watching/downloading videos on either?
but zen is pretty easy,
cos i've got one
better than everything else.
my zen I've had for only a few months is fucked. :(
mine is fine
Purley for the ease of browsing for music
the menu navigation is better
I just did eeny-meeny miney moe.
Coz It's cheaper...
End of thread.
I love mine.
because i use WMP and it syncs with the library automatically
certainly used to have more file formats
slightly better sound
One went under a tube train
One I smashed the screen
One just broke
I HATE THEM
(apart from the first one which was a tragedy)
about ten times and it's still fine.
oh and to be fair the second one was my fault. I kept hitting it because it wouldn't work.
The third one just had a hard disk error and was irrepairable
Every time mine has supposedly broken, I just hit the reset button, and it's fine. They're clearly less breakable then iPods.
if you buy songs on itunes, can you put them on a zen, iriver, non-ipod, etc. straight away?
do they all support whatever format itunes songs are downloaded in?
but i assume you are downloading mp3s, in which case, Yes. mp3 is supported by all mp3 players :D
How do you convert them without using iTunes?
the iTunes format when you buy/download from the Store?
but the end results will sound shitter than what you start with because they've been recompressed.
much more user-friendly and intuitive. and the headphone socket doesn't fuck up after 3 months, as happened with all 3 zens i had.
and have had no problems with that.
if you get the zen, don't use the earphones that come with them, they're not very good
i only ever buy cheap earphones anyway though.
I've had it 2 and a bit years - that's probably the usual life for consumer electronics these days though
I'll look into that, thanks
that was me
Has radio, more compatable etc.
BUT you don't get the wicked little dial...
they're smaller and dont have pointless features.
also, my creative broke.
I've had mine for years now, it's become one of my most treasured posessions, and it's not even half full yet.
my big old ugly creative zen 20gb is a real workhorse, it has never had any problems, I've thrown it down the side of snowdon, it was fine. I've dropped it in a water trough, it was fine. i've dropped it whilst cycling at 30mph, fine. It's very very scratched as you can imagine, but just keeps chugging on.
Battery life has been very good too.
Cheaper than an ipod.
you can kill people with it, it reminds me of old episodes of Doctor Who. It's got this massive dent in it from when I dropped it on a bollard. Fantastic thing.
nice and solid and heavy. all heavy items last well. things that seem to light usually break. this is a proven electronic equipment fact.
the creative zen is a brick, something with a solidity resembling that of a shotputt.
and ALSO i know the user interface is shit, but since I am using an apple macbook, i have a special bit of user-created software i downloaded which actually has a far better user interface than either iTunes or the creative jukebox stuff...
Work well even if you don't use Itunes
but anyone who suggests Zen is a fucking lemon, a stooge for the evil bigwigs at Creative, or just very lucky indeed
the most useless piece of garbage you could possibly invest in. Sound quality and all that shite is fine, but reliability? FUCKING LIABILITY
My family went through about 7 in a year, all breaking in an instant and never working again. Other people have told me similiar stories. Do not buy a Zen
nobody here (I doubt) knows true return rates and things so we're all just going by personal experience. I have had a Zen for 3 years and have not had a single problem. Most people I know also have them and I genuinely don't know anyone who has had a problem either.
or me and my compadres are massively unlucky
my third one just arrived today (i lost the previous two). I have a shuffle and zen...the iPod is simply brilliant, and iTunes is much easier to use than the creative software.
I love mine with a passion.
i think if you buy an mp3 player you're going to have to accept that it's probably going to break, whichever brand you get.
i got a creative because i thought it would be more reliable than an ipod. it broke less than a year after i got it. one thing i will say is that the interface for creatives is shit. i'd probably go for an ipod next time just buy a 3 year warranty.
my wonderful parents got me one in florida in oct last year as an early xmas present,30g one,i was rather impressed cos they dont have a scoobie about mp3 players. The ony probems i have is occasionaly the player takes a while "loading" from song to song, and occasionally it freezes but its easy to reset,it is bigger and not as "cool" looking as an ipod but minze has been fantastic so far.
I guess its just luck (or is that bad luck) if your mp3 player breaks,my mate has had several ipods and has had problems with each of them.
In conclusion,id go with the zen.
they all seem to come back for more.
I've just got the new Shuffle and it's working fine, not very much to go wrong with it though.
the design looks better and its much easier to navigate around the songs and such. yes, mp3 players are shit and break after a year (everyone i know who has one that happened to!) but if you get any id get an ipod.
I know it wasn't an option in your question but get a really old school zen, a Zen Xtra. Now that was a sexy beast of a machine; none of this touch pad nonsense, none of this plastic crap. Solid metal that would never break, buttons you could actaully feel, a logical display, loads of settings you could screw around with and awesome sound quality.
My friend has had his for three years and if it ever breaks he wants to buy another one.
