What is it, exactly?
For real. I'd not heard the word until a few months ago!
I am listening to camera obscura's if looks could kill. Is this twee?
My best guess at what it actually means is sort of sweet but old fashioned, no?
and a way of thinking developed out of the C86 cassette and initially covering bands on Sarah Records but latterly applied to lots of strummy (and now bleepy) indie bands. All aspects of the culture are characterised by being naive, overcute and a bit childish, as well as shy and resolutely uncool.
basically: something slightly cutesy and sweet and generally too nice, yet you can enjoy it anyway. I think.
see the following examples
pretty much :D
kill you if he saw that...
where I asked him to rate himself on the Twee Scale. And he gave himself a 9!!!!
he goes on about how stuart murdoch would hate to think his band were 'twee' and continues to talk about how unbearable the whole thing is?
then admit that he is actually the twee-est person in Edinburgh. And THAT is something to be really proud of.
ps. i am not twee, you cockramp
Picture with stupid screwed up eyes which is really really cute
Liking of really violent films that doesn't suit your apperance
Really really short and pretty
^ all these make you twee!!!!
what kind of measure of tweeness is that?
does that make the scenester who has rape fantasies twee?
i always thought it was the kind of people that used bowlie that were twee, ive obviously got it ALL WRONG.
i wonder who's the most twee on drownedinsound?
my money is on traynor.
with indiesoc enough if john's the twee-est person you've met in edinburgh... (not that im recommending it mind :D)
so true. i *wish* i was the twee-est person in edinburgh.*
* - probably not really.
That peacock email address should be preserved for future generations of tweenagers.
maybe a bit twee...:P
*google searches "puppies"*
*first image cancels out all tweeness has ever had*
*back to denial*
the musical/clothing equivalent of marzipan. Nice in small amounts, sickening in large quantities.
= twee pop
Umm. Well, sort of.
Examples of twee clothing please?
Thanks. Sorry for such a dull thread but this has been bugging me for a while. I won't let a four letter word defeat me!
loads of badges
pigtails on girls
anything that makes you look a little bit childish
what's the difference?
as in, the general indie look came from the twee kids in the late 80s/early 90s
that pretty_vacant is living in the 80's?
otherwise, surely it's just a bit 'indie'?? i'm clearly not getting this.
just that style of dressing, cardigans and cords and looking cute, comes from what the indie kids in the early 90s (who listened to twee) were wearing... obviously it's changed a bit.
pretty much the hottest thing on a cute girl.
you should see madd......
with a sunny disposition. Like modern day hippies playing acoustic guitars and glockenspiels with flowers in their hair sitting in Starbucks and silently contemplating suicide, that sort of thing.
I'd say 'Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken' is most representative of this.
what else apart from c o and b&s of bands now are twee?
like suburban kids with biblical names and so forth...
id also imagine the blow probably are as well?
the bobby mcgees of course.
(and I'm a pretty learned guy) till I starting seeing this B&S fan about a year ago. Then suddenly twee this twee that oh isn't that so twee.
We lasted about a month.
To me it sounds like someone from Leeds going towards some urine
"Can you clean up please man from Leeds?
"Ok, I'll start by going t'wee"
became popular in the mid eighties (c 1986). The then plethora of fanzines-with-flexis and compilation cassettes spread twee around. However, twee was invented by Trixie's Big Red Motorbike in 1982.
Twee pop, also known as love rock, anorak rock, cutie pop or shambling, and when it is fused with punk style, cuddlecore, is a type of indie pop that is known for simple, sweet melodies and lyrics, often combined with jangling guitars. While groups in this style had existed previously, twee pop was first recognised as a distinct genre in 1986, when a number of these bands, including Shop Assistants, Primal Scream and The Pastels, emerged simultaneously, and were showcased on C86, a compilation released by mail-order through New Musical Express (see 1986 in music). At the time, the genre was also analysed in Melody Maker by Simon Reynolds, who saw in it a rejection of dominant 1980s values of commercialism and Americanisation and a yearning for a perceived innocent past.
Trixie's Big Red Motorbike started it all four years earlier.
Listen to 'One Nation Under A Brolley'

It was The Dreamers and the legendary Harvey Williams
then they were just watching....
Have you not heard their first Peel session?
then listen to 'country girl' and weep from a new perspective.
were two years after Trixie's Big Red Motorbike.
However, the fact that you mentioned them is laudable.
I got a few bits after reading how much respect Ian McKaye had for them. Some of it is a bit too smithsy though.
Calvin Johnson's growly voice is brilliant
after Field Day on Saturday and had a long argument with two friends about my KNOWLEDGE that women couldn't be twee. You know how dogs can't look up? I was just as sure women didn't have the natural characteristics and emotions for tweenes. Men? yes, clearly see: Belle & Sebastian, cords, satchels etc, but women are never twee.
I can't remember what made me so sure about this - I argued for ages and was positive I was right.
Don't believe it anymore.
what you are all calling "twee" is what vancouver-ites used to call "emo" back in 1998-ish times! now it seems to have a VERY different meaning!!!
i actually am twee after all.
theres often confusion between the two
but the music's ace.
I am beginning to get it.
This also helped:
or some of it
about marzipan basically? This seems the easiest way to remember it.
