Me "What have you been up to this morning?"
Her "I just flew a plane"
That doesn't make any sense.
You: Sod all
just was waiting for the 'my mother in law is so fat...' :P
I'll stop taking my punchlines from the 80's
i just did read it in that sort of voice
Wait I don't have a girlfriend.
doesn't say very often, not an open offer.
you know me so well.
just waiting to to hit :P
dropped the bomb. And waht a bomb it was.
I've told you once, I DON'T WANT ANY.
and i haven't really bothered to say anything either, but i was inspired by you calling me stupid when i made a sarcastic comment, i thought it was a great ice breaker!
what it was you said, but i'm confident it wasn't a sarcastic comment but a stupid one, hence i called you stupid.
but you also said it was sarcastic at the time.
one day i hope to have a good discussion with you, but i honestly don't know if i could hold off from being too sarky.
When debating though, things such as sarcasm and bad language can undermine any point being made. A point that most members of DiS have yet to grasp.
but i do think some elements of sarcasm are required in certain cases. otherwise statements come accross as being too matter of fact, when in reality they are just personal points of view.
also if used correctly it should prevent an discussion from becoming argument and too heated.
you're ruining a funny thread...
and take pictures
I do actually quite like the idea of sarcasm being you used as a way of keeping a debate grounded.
Ok then, change sarcasm with hyperbole. Hyberbole is the death of all sensible debate.
Is it very clever or very stupid, I can't tell.
is what very clever or very stupid?
If you're joking then ^5, if not then (insert smiley of clenched fist)
Hyperbole by it's very nature is the distortion of fact. And fact is the core of a strong argument. Therefore, by default, a debate where both sides use hyperbole will be a debate not grounded in fact, and a debate not grounded in fact is not going to achieve anything.
but it is useful in conveying conviction or strength of feeling and adding to extra points. like i said you just have to not take it literally and use it sparingly
essentially just making things up.
And if one deploys it regularly, it will become difficult to differentiate when someone is telly the truth and when they are lying (using hyperbole). Boy who cried wolf, essentially.
its exaggeration for dramtic effect. you have to differentiate that from lying.
and shout 'aaahh, fuck this is the worst pain ever!!!!', I am using hyperbole, but i am also lying, as it is not actually the worst pain ever.
And, as i say, differentiating is fine, but if used regularly, this becomes more and more difficult.
have you effectively conveyed how you feel? yes.
would anyone call you a liar seriously? no.
If someone in the House of Lords said: 'we have to pull the troops out of Iraq because literally a bajillion people have died', would they be taken seriously? No.
They have made their point, and everyone knows what they are trying to get across, but without factual evidence the point can not be taken seriously.
Do you see now?
You've ruined this thread.
pieces_of_Reeces started it with a mild manner 'attack' by making judgements about my personality, which is fine. But then it would seem you and fucktherave took it upon yourselves to enter into discourse with me and protracted the debate. If you didn't want the thread to go this way you simply shouldn't have replied to my posts. You are equally to blame therefore.
DiS is not the house of commons. completely perfect factual evidence is far less important, we argue in generalities far more.
the Lords is known as the Upper Chamber for a reason, mainly because it is seen as having a higher quality of debate than the Commons.
but im not going to argue about that, because you are a conservative and there would be very little point.
and yet again youve been hypocritical. why criticise me like that?
little understanding of the British political system. It is not a worthless relic but one that many argue is in need of reform. Which is the very reason MPs voted on it's reformation a few months ago.
It is also very luky that those in the Commons do not simply say 'there's little point in arguing with them, they're just Conservative.' Let's not forget that the Conservatives are the second biggest Party in the country. It's a non-sensical point to make.
We shall debate further once you have matured. This is not sarcasm, it is a point based on fact.
the lords as it is now is useless. If it is reformed properly. i.e. furthering the action taken with the removal of hereditary peers it maybe useful.
I was stating that as you are conservative in your views (not Conservative as in the party) it is of little worth arguing about such things as we will just have polar views.
I like discussing things but then you ruin it by being a cock.
or you would know that MPs have ALREADY voted for the remoaval of hereditary peers and have voted for an 80% elected, 20% appointed split. As such, your point that herditary peears should be removed is about 2 months late. Everyone, including the Conservatives, and indeed myslef, agreed with you.
I also don't really see where i've been a cock either. I have laid down my viewpoints in a sensible and level-headed manner.
this discussion is stupid!!!
one side is in possesion of fact the other is not. There can only be one winner.
In saying that, we're both losers for wasting our afternoons talking about this stuff! I'm just trying to get my post count to 1000!
i said furthering the action taken with the removal of hereditary peers.
Youve criticised me and my maturity which was pretty uncalled for.
I think that shows your level of maturity. You did it to yourself.
In addition, they already have taken it further by, as i say, voting to make a largely elected House.
Also, saying that the Lords could be useful but only if is reformed properly, whilst giving no hint as to what this 'proper reformation' should be, isn't really making an argument at all. Is the abolition of the Lords all together proper reformation? 100% elected? 100% appointed? What?
I may have come across as patronising, and maybe I am a bit, but I don't meant to. I do see your age as a factor unfortunately. This isn't to say at 18 your points aren't valid, but as someone who I assume hasn't ever voted, it's a bit hard to take your opinion as some form of authority.
you obvously dont consider me worthy, and patronise me as a result.
1) For one of the most egotistical reasons ever, to educate. You may have learnt something new about the Lords, about debating, about structuring arguments, whatever, maybe you didn't. It's all to easy to only hear one side of things on here, I arrogantly like to see myself as the counterbalance. This is quit a silly and untrue reason actually.
2) I take the bait, I always do. Maybe it's a character flaw. I often see myself as an underdog on here, and one that has to fight to get his opinion heard as it often doesn't agree with the majority of users. This often leads to me being called silly things like a racist, a xenophobe, A Tory (which is true, but is often used as an insult, although I see it as a positive thing).
3) Most importantly, to get my post count to 100. Then I might quit DiS.
get to 1000 and then quit. thanks
was quite evidently not very serious. Looks liek you missed it.
Also, swearing again, your doing yourself no favours if you wish to be taken seriously.
i used to think yeah i dont agree with him, but hes got his points and i respected you for arguing them.
now i just think you are an arrogant twat. and yes i swore again.
do care what I think, or you would have stopped posting on this thread about an hour ago.
i was enjoying a reasonably pleasant debate but then you just seemed to become arrogant and patronising.
because I AM pretty arrogant.
I thought you liked facts...
took you a while to come up with that. What a clever boy you are.
And it took you seven minutes to make a crap response.
well....debate/good argument does not only rely on facts....because, if only facts are talked about then there is nothing to discuss. facts are used to then try to predict where something will end up, to do this one mus extrapolate......if the extrapolation just stops after a short while then you cannot see whether a dirstion is safe to go in. If you extrapolate further .....and mention hyperbole, then you can see the ultimate expression of a course and then take safeguards to avoid going too far down a path.
mostly by ignorants who repeat opinions that they have picked up from some newspaper columnist.
Hyperbole can be funny anyway
it is known as the upper chamber to liken it to the toilet
just it shouldnt be taken literally
for illustrating a point. In fact, it is the complete opposite of useful.
its always been used in literature. you just have to not take everything said completely literally.
I'll grasp the point of YOUR member!
thats just sick dude.
you went too far... too far.
Heartily denounce this sort of ridiculous behaviour.
you call people stupid for example. thats exactly the same. the whole sarcasm ruins any point you might have i really dont subsribe to. you tit :P
calling someone stupid is neither bad language nor sarcastic.
just as much. e.g. 'playground arguement'
but it doesn't add to the flow of discussion in any way. it's completely counter productive and just serves to make you (speaking non-specifically here) look like a nonce.
really glad I started this poorly worded thread!
me and Annie was always a casual thing, i let ehr know that it wasn't going to lead anywhere.
I just had to read this thread out to my team to explain why I was laughing so much.
Bamos, you are my hero!
they DON'T say very often
it would be pretty weird if she DID say that though, wouldn't it? :D
the mind plays tricks
My girlfriend: "hi, im your girlfriend".
My girlfriend: "hi, im your girlfriend"
Her "today I'll cook"
Her "today I'll wash the dishes"
Her "today it's me who get up at 6am to take care of the kids"
buy one off the internet from russia. then she still wont say "hello", well she will, but it will be in russian. it will more be like where is my heroin. and my kids. and my husband. maybe dont do this.
