Paul Thomas Anderson
astronomically overated charlatens!
keep a shot for more than half a second! grr.
Spielberg's done some schmaltzy rubbish, but he's also done Jaws. And Raiders of the Lost Ark. And Duel. And Close Encounters.
are some of the best of all time, then you can't really be considered as 'the worst director of all time'.
Maybe 'most hit and miss'. But then he'd still lose to John Carpenter.
Escape from New York and Escape from LA
Halloween and Memoirs of an invisible man
Assault on Precinct 13 and Ghosts of Mars
Dark Star and Big Trouble in Little China
LOVES Big Trouble.i htought it was ok.
but yeah, between Precinct 13, Dark Star, Halloween, The Thing and Escape rom New York he has proved he CAN make great films.
I think the magic's died.
the opinion that Escape from LA is a bad film.
It's SO funny.
I honestly prefer it to New York
I love the Basketball Scene.
I love the tin can scene.
Snake Plissken 'shuts down the world'.
How could I not love the film?
You're a very bad man.
War of the Worlds (2005)
Minority Report (2002)
The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
Schindler's List (1993)
Jurassic Park (1993)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989)
Empire of the Sun (1987)
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984)
E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Duel (1971) (TV)
None of them are truly awful. Some come close but not many.
is pretty naff?
It's a fucking great movie. The sequel is let down by a terrible ending section but when I re-watched it I had to admit that it's still decent when it's on the island.
But I always found it enjoyable. Therefore I can't really say for sure.
i don't know why.
JP is pretty good. LW not so much.
Minority Report is a bit meh.
haven't seen the others that id dint already mention
so, in fact, I automatically win. Yeah!
If you honestly think Spielberg is one of the worst directors ever, purely in a technical sense, you're a total moron.
From a technical point of view, his films are all good. However, he promulgated the big safe bloated film which pretends to be about something when it's not. He always, ALWAYS spunks out an ending that makes you want to hit him. We have him to thank for Dan Brown, Michael Bay and Coldplay.
like MrTheWarn said up there ^^^^
hes done Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, Raiders, Last Crusade, Saving Private Ryan, and others that i haven't seen yet like Schindlers List, which are all great! oh and catch me if you can!
sure hes also done AI, ET, War of the Worlds, Temple of doom (WHY???) and loads of others i have delelted from my memory.
was his last film really war of the worlds? what the hell is he up to?? (apart from Indy 4 obv!!!!)
He's producing a lot apparently...
add that to the list of good ones.
but that was still about 2 years ago, non?
which is why I find him so frustrating. He does something really good like Munich or Catch Me If You Can and then he goes and does retarded all-enveloping shit waves like War of the Worlds. He could do so much for modern cinema, and he chooses not to.
Oh, and Saving Private Ryan? Fucking awful.
SVP is a fine war film....
SPR isn't GREAT, but its still a good film i reckon. certainly not fucking awful!
I'm playing Martbowski's advocate to a certain extent here, but it's nowhere near as good as people have it. That flag at the end...YOU SEE! THATS WHAT ALL THAT GRATUITOUS VIOLENCE AT THE START WAS FOR LOL! THERE WAS NOBODY ELSE IN THAT WAR WHATSOEVER! I wanted to kill him.
Spielberg made a film following a small group of American Soldiers.
Why would he include any other troops?
The Action scenes are easily amongst the best depictions of combat in any film.
because there were French, British, Canadian and Polish soldiers who died on the beaches as well? Why didn't their flags come up at the end?
The action sequences were ok. Very real. Nazis still can't shoot for shit I notice.
the film showed the storming of Omaha beach, which was done entirely by the US.
And the flag at the end is in a US Military Cemetery so only one flag.
Also. Pretty much every american died in the battle.
when people are fanatical about a film, they'll come up with technical answers when someone criticises it. Yes I realise it's Omaha Beach and that a US Military Cemetary is unlikely to have more than one flag in it. What I'm asking is why Spielberg decided only to show Omaha and only included American troops in the whole thing.
Yes, good thing they managed to take about 100 Germans each with them, wasn't it? No pointless, arbitrary death for the heros.
You're just coming up with mindless criticism of it
it was a film about a small group of soldiers.
It's utterly uneccesary to show other troops.
At the end they are ambushing a german company. Defenders kill more people than attackers.
You're laying FAR too much blame at his feet. He's basically made films for entertainment so if you class him as a 'worst director' I'm not sure who you're leaving yourself with?
Even films by him I don't particularly like are clearly better than the sort of shit you see from genuinely piss poor directors.
Try watching 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Temple of Doom' back to back and despite how risibly bad Temple of Doom seems, it quickly becomes a masterpiece of storytelling, filming and acting.
Try putting Temple of Doom back-to-back with Predator and Alien.
because you're citing him as a 'worst director'.
I'm not claiming he's the best director ever, just objecting to the suggestion that you can honestly put him in the 'worst' category.
I just don't rate him at all, and wanted to fight with someone about it.
is the equal of those films.
Certainly better than Predator, and it's too close to call with Alien.
They're both great movies, let's face it.
Anyway, the comparison was to do with 'worst director' as I said above.
Event Horizon was ace !
And Underworld prequel ?
Please no !
he's quite a fascinating/demented character actually. Unfortunately his films are sehr sehr bad.
More directors should make such an offer. I reckon it would be close between me and Woody Allen.
I was just going to dress up as his adopted daughter and see where the night led.
Further proof the man is a douche
The man deserves to burn
Paul W.S. Anderson no ?
Eyes Wide Shut? give me a fucking break! 2001?! zzzzZZZZzzzz...
Paths of Glory
ive given him two chances i refuse to give him anymore
3 of the best films I've ever seen. Especially Dr Strangelove.
Full Metal Jacket are both pretty overrated though.
IN MY OPINION
films that are over 20 years old, theyre all rubbish
They're all in black and white too!
No subtitles, but that's pretty much all they've got going for 'em.
how many helicopter explosions were there in Dr Strangelove? none i bet, that says it all really. plus a distinct lack of gratuitous nudity probably, they were all gayers back then.
but it HAS got a nuclear explosion.
and we all know Nukes>helicopters, right kids?
